Same shit, different season. Althouh Hammet cant be blamed for professional players not having the ability to catch a ball or control it. Then again he does pick the team. With a bit of luck, the Nix might end up with higher crowd averages though.

Chiefs looking pretty handy tonight. Between them and the sharks for the title I reckon.

Chiefs must be rather disappointed that they only got a 14k crowd. Two time defending champs and struggling to draw a crowd, its rather depressing.

It's not just the Nix! Crowd at the last Canes game was about 8k from memory, which is pretty average for a first game at home.

I remember when there was a waiting list for season tickets to see the Canes and the Lions. At least with the Phoenix we started with 14 and although we too have dropped, it is not as significant for our main "players" to be losing so many. Full house signs in the early days of the stadiums rugby history...or near enough to it.

Considering we got 12k for our first home game didn't we?

Good to see the lads put some points on. But still leaking too many. Barrett was immense tonight I cant wait to see him in a yellow shirt for years to come!

Just over 8k as well this year I think. 12k was last season vs Bling with first game of ADP.

Completely agree. Barrett is great to watch.
Think we're going to be a lot better just giving it a go (as we did tonight) rather than trying to keep things tight like last week. A lot better to watch too.

Hammet out.

He'd be the first nz coach to get the boot mid season I think. Don't think it will happen.

Reported as 9k in Napier tonight, does that mean we are as big a draw card as them now?

Peter Russell is coming back from the UK, he might be a decent shout. Experienced coach that knows the region & as much as I hate to admit it the 'pies played very well udner him.

There was a reason the Magpies got rid of him despite performing pretty well and why he was overlooked when they gave the job to Hammet. Relationship with his players was never wonderful.

But whether his time in the UK has changed him, who knows.

I'm a Tawa supporter, so am probably biased, but think Chris Boyd should get the gig. I have no idea why we seem to think people from outside the region will automatically be better. It meant we lost Rennie and got Hammett.

Agreed.  If Plumtree isn't an option, I would be happy with Boyd.  O'Halloran isn't ready yet, so isn't an option.

From my understanding at the time, Rennie wasn't interested in the Canes job when it was offered.

I like Boydy, always seemed like a decent bloke and one of the best rugby brains i've ever heard speak. However, i'd be slightly sceptical about his record. Still hasn't taken Wellington to an NPC title and has been the coach of the NZ 20's when they have had their two worst finishes at the World Champs.

In saying all of that, i'd probably go with him and bring in Tiatia and O'Halloran along side him. Whether that is what they do, who knows.

Was thinking about going in for the 'Canes v Blues game on Friday. $25 + ticketek fees + $12 on the train makes it kinda unattractive as a neutral fan.

Theres always an excuse! Fact is only winning will get you through the gates.

This latches onto the crowds thread, but I haven't actually paid to go to a rugby match for a long long time. I just go along if someone offers me a free one, which happens reasonably often. Have already gone to two free Canes games this year. Ironically, I've noticed that most of the people with access to the freebies are people who could easily afford to pay anyway. We live in a weird world.

I think I'll concentrate on some club footy this weekend. Games on Friday and Monday, and Tawa are flying at the top of the table and looking very strong.

In my defence, I wouldnt pay that even to see a winning Hurricanes team. More Manawatu players in the Highlanders & Chiefs than our 'local' franchise now.

Shows rugby is suffering from the same issue I went on about a week or 2 ago in the nix crowds thread (I think?)

Yep, that's what I was referring to in the first sentence. And they definitely are.
Sometimes I wonder (for rugby more than the Nix) whether they really care much about the gate at all, other than having enough numbers to make it look alright for TV (where they make all their money).

Boyd was no surprise, but Plumtree was. Pretty happy with that combo though. Lots of experience and local knowledge.

Very happy to see Jason Woodward coming back as well. Hopefully with some locals in charge we can keep some of the talent within the franchise for a change.

Agreed.  Don't know if it is possible, but I would LOVE to see them try and get Ellison back as a replacement for Leiua/Bateman.

But Mark Hammet is going to bring a new, better winning culture to a team that made the playoffs (top 4, not top 6) 4 out of the previous 6 years.

Was at the game tonight, the Parkes/Bateman combination just did not work, we really missed Leiua and Smith.  The few times we had the ball it was just shovelled aimlessly along the backline.

Bring on Boyd & Plumtree.
