On Freeview, it may include EPL, lower English leagues, some European stuff, A-League etc, would you get it and (despite being a Freeview) would you pay anything for it? If so how much?

I basically agreed to pay for sky at our flat because of Football (and to a lesser extent tennis). So yea, highly possible if it had stuff that wasn't on sky already. For instance: NZFC, SPL, other confederation championships apart from Europe (IE: African Nations Cup).

If so, I'd pay a couple of hundred up front for installation. There's also a couple of other things on Freeview that I wouldn't mind checking out.

Yes and I would look to pay $10-$15 p/w after installation costs

Yep. Our MySky decoder is packing a sad at the moment...hoping to save all those epic games this season but not too hopeful.
Sky say if they need to replace the decoder I lose all the favourites saved.Big suck.
About now a football channel on Freeview looks good to me.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Nice idea, but would never ever happen. Broadcast rights for each of those competitions are staggeringly high and we are too small a market to make it viable for anyone but Sky. a subscription only channel wouldn't work either. the rugby channel exclusive content is only opinion shows and re-runs, everything else is broadcast on normal sports channels. and if sky bundled everything onto one channel and dropped the normal football coverage on the other sports channels there would be an uproar.

Also sky offer ESPN which purchase rights to show football competitions independent of sky - we get the Aussie ESPN channel. Sky have no say in what is shown on that channel.

To answer your question, yes i would get it, and i would pay my entire sky(telstra cable) subscription for that alone.

On Sky I might.

On Sky I would.  However, I'd hope it wouldn't be overrun with English stuff.

Here's what it'd have to have: EPL, Championship, SPL, Bundesliga, La Liga, Seria A (reluctantly), Dutch, Portugeuse, Greek, Russian, American, and Argentinian leagues (and A-League and NZFC).

I doubt it possible that this one channel could cater to all my needs, however, if possible I'd pay a lot for it.

I would, it's more than possible to have freeview and sky at the same time, would be a good excuse to buy a flash tele with freeview built in. The leagues I'd require though would be EPL through Div2, SPL, Europe + Europa, HAL, NZFC, O-League and international 'A' matches. Anything else to me would be a bonus.

Dutch, Greek and Russian leagues not so much, but the rest are leagues I'd love to have easy access to. The Spanish and Italian cups would be great as well, not to mention all the international tournaments.

And the Brazilian leagues, with the Brazilian commentators.

You know we belong together...

Mexican league would be cool to see some of. Richest league outside of Europe.

It's not exactly a football-only channel, but I think it's time to start getting onto SKY and putting some pressure on them to come to an agreement with Setanta so that Setanta's coverage can be viewed via a Sky box.

In Australia, Setanta is available through the pay-tv networks, so I can't see why that couldn't happen here too.

This, combined with Sky's existing football coverage would give virtually 24-hour football coverage.

Today they're showing: FA Cup, Bundesliga, Serie A, Scottish Premier League, Copa Libertadores highlights (plus India vs South Africa test cricket).

In the next week or so, they're also showing football from: France, Holland, Spain, Scottish Cup, Champions League (plus GAA for our Irish friends).  Next Monday, the football starts at 7am and doesn't stop until 11.15am on Tuesday morning!

Hmmm interesting, cheers guys.

Be interesting to know just how much the rights cost, shouldn't they be proportional to the amount of people that are actually going to watch?

I would most definitely be interested in this Michael. Couple questions though:

1) What main leagues/competitions would feature?
2) Would there be an option to 'pick n mix' certain leagues/competitions a la some sort of package deal?

Three for me, and two for them.

Yes. As far as I am aware it was dropped here when only really SPL was shown on it? Now there is FA Cup, SPL, Carling Cup, Internationals and other sports as well.

I would pay those fools about $25 a month more if I could get the SPL on it!

edit - it's also something to do with what satellite is used apparently?

Australia had the 24-hour 'Fox Footy Channel' (which was AFL based) for a while but that went belly up about 5 years ago.

Pretty much here with Fox Sports, SBS, ESPN, One HD and Setanta we have 24 hour soccer coverage, but a Fox Soccer Channel (which is available in the US) may be some time off.

May be a joint Australian/NZ thing to get this idea off the ground. Will have to happen after other contracts run out though
