I need to sign up to the internet at home.  We're fairly heavy users, who should I go with?

Right now I am torn between "Now"  or "Transpower" for this. Transpower deal is 24 months, first 12 months is $49 for vdsl unlimited and a phone, the 2nd 12 months sees it rise to $70 a month. You are signed into a 24 month contract but only an extra 30 for unlimited. However, Transpower are going to connect up to fibre very soon.

www.nownz.co.nz/ are doing a deal for fibre bb at between $70 and $133 per month with a phone, depending on your selected bb speed.  I need to make a decision over the next few days. Gonna can Genisis and Voadfone who offered to knock only $10 off my current $160 per month which included sky and sky sports.

You definitely want Fibre if you can get it. You'll never go back.

Transpower told me that they would switch me over at no expense as fibre is in the street now. It is just up to them to sort their end of the operation out.

We don't get fibre (are too far from the exchange for VDSL and down a private road so no vodafone cable) where I live in Karori, I was moaning to the chorus guy about it, he said that whole streets of fibre are going unsused because people are refusing it, prefering just adsl even though the costs are the same.

Fibre is not going to be in our area for another year, and even then we're renting up a shared driveway with 3 other houses so there are probably too many people who would need to agree to driveway being dug up. For now I've had no complaints with Vodafone ADSL.

I would go for 100 gig if you plan on watching a lot of games. I currently have 60 gig but wouldnt mind more as I dispatch Sky.

I'm paying $89 a month for unlimed on a 30/10 plan.  Could push to 100 but 30 is reliable and meets all my streaming needs.

Unlimited works in a house with a Teenager, assorted gamers and streaming.

Of course I'm not really paying.

Probably not enough. We smoke about 120 a month but there is a 15 year old in the house so late night HD porn sessions are probably pushing that up.

If you want to use convenient online stuff like Dropbox or Backblaze to back your things up best to go for 100+.

In saying that, in your porn habit is under control there's probably no harm in trying the lesser cap and increasing if necessary.

Just looking at switching myself, inspired by this thread.

Be aware that switching ULF speed (e.g. going from 30/10 to 100/20) may cost you - $50 a pop with Now according to the guy on the phone.

We're also on an unlimited plan and smoke through 120GB most months and get closer to 250GB every 3rd month. Currently we have Sky, but I do play games (Not internet multiplayer, but most are downloaded), and we watch a lot of online streamed content. If you are going to be downloading TV I would be thinking over 50GB, but you need to know your usage.

I noticed a substantial improvement in experience going up to 100/10 from 50/2 on Vodafone Cable (used to be TelstraClear).

I was particularly surprised how much the increased upload speed made a difference to things I do every day - uploading images for example.

Worth the extra tenner or whatever it cost.

Oh and one tip with Vodafone if you're going to sign on with them: make a list of all the various offers that OTHER providers have and haggle. They throw in all sorts of shark if you push them to. Free Neon, speed upgrades, free installation, reduced contract term etc etc etc.

Smithy that Power Company says I can go onto fibre in about 8 weeks for free if I take the vdsl deal. To be honest, I find the $49per month for unlimited and a phone kinda hard to refuse.

Yeah Tranniepower are pushing hard to establish a customer base. I'd go for it too but no fibre in my street yet.

we have! Thsts me decision made. To those not doing the package thing, I would recommend "Now" as a provider, their site is brilliant. And they answer with only one artifical voice before you get their phone with a helpful human voice.

I have had fibre for the past 15 months at my place in palmy. FREAKING LOVE IT don't ever want to go back to slow speeds, we have unlimited data and the fastest plan as we download, stream music and video, Youtube, and game. Of everything gaming takes the least data and streaming and downloading the most. We normally sit around 150-250gb per month but have hit 500gb one month.

We are with Orcon paying like $130 a month for highest speed, unlimited data and phone line.

Forgot to say this is great, we will quite often be streaming something in source settings from twitch on two laptops (and mine normally has more than one stream open at a time), while our PC to the TV will be streaming Netflix and it does it no problem.

If I had not grabbed the $49 per month unlimited Ultra fast cable broadband from Trust Power, I would have definately gone for the www.nownz.co.nz deal.

It was worse before they split from Telecom, as back then all Telecom connections were prioritised over any others, at least now that doesn't seem to happen. In saying that I believe that they do still prioritise some companies over others depending on how much* the company pays them to do an installation.

*This is starred as supposedly the payment to Chorus is set in stone as a set monthly 'line charge' but given some companies can get me a Chorus guy out within 24hrs, and others minimum is 48hrs it says it all really :)
