I had a quick look through the forum to see if there was a similar thread, but alas my glances through turned up nothing, so here we are.
Now that interest rates are dropping, it's feeling as though there is far more incentive to put your money to use outside the confines of term deposits and other bank provided savings options.
I'm specifically looking to see what platforms people are using to get in to the stock market (Hatch, Sharesies, Tiger Brokers, IBKR etc) and what stocks people are carrying in their fledgling portfolios. Perhaps those that do this more than part time might look to impart some of their wisdom and experience as well.
Personally, I jump in and out of investing in stocks at least a few times a year - It's time consuming, and if you want to do it right I believe you need a half decent understanding of what you're getting yourself into - This includes having a bit of a penchant for numbers and data. A little bit of luck never hurt anyone either!
For my situation at the moment I'm using Tiger Brokers because of the promotional plan I signed up for, which is very cheap (compared to Sharesies). I deposited and brought about $2000 worth of shares over the past week and paid $0.55 as a settlement fee and maybe a couple of dollars on the fx exchange margin from NZD to AUD. I'd be curious to know what fees other platforms charge as I think that represents pretty good value. I'm pretty sure IBKR is no fees, but I just don't like their user interface.
Feel free to share your experiences or tips in here. I'll share what I'm investing in in another post. Just curious really to see if Kiwis are jumping on board the investing train.
