I've just opened up a Sharetrading account with my bank because I thought it would be an interesting thing to try. I'm not going to be investing huge amounts but before I start I'm wondering if people have any tips on what I need to look for in a good stock and basically anything that will help before I start.

Also, what are some good stocks to look at? (I mean other than Enron)

Basically, unless you have quite a bit behind you I would steer clear of stocks for two reasons:
-there is a minimum fee, so the more you buy the less proportionately is the fee.
-more importantly, you would presumably want to diversify a bit into different sectors.

Yellow Fever racehorse! Let's do it, we can win the Melbourne Cup. Gte about 100 people, all paying $1000, get a decent horse for $100,000...

it might also be wise to look at what is happening in the wider scheme of share trading.
who is doing it?
If there is serious lack of re-investment by people I'll call my generation (40years) and younger
so when 'older people' retire they often 'cash up'. but what will this mean? Numerous pundits from across the political spectrum have opinionated on this.

there is a couple of 'ethical' share organizations well worth a bo-peep at.
do a search mate
you can specify what type of companies your OK with buying into
ie: no vivisection, no cluster bombs, no land mines etc,

I've made a considerable amount of $ out of shares but I'm highly skeptical that brains or ability has much to do with it. Sharon Crosbie once called the share market the middle class TAB. Looking back at some of these earning summary's the results are quite random, so always take a cross-section of dates, I see sometimes I've returned less than the actual amount in, and on others nearly tripled the deposit in.  What would be interesting is to start two accounts, one in a bank and one in a share funs and let them go for 10 years...

we could bet on the outcome Cosimo then have a punt on the Cup

Always wondered how the Swiss kept those things hidden.  Maybe that's why they talk in a sing-songey voice.

They don't hide them per se, they just deflate them. Guess how they're inflated?

Slowly?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I'm not sure my guess is correct.  If it was then Switzerland should be the happiest place in the world.

Instead it is only 7th (above NZ and immediatley below Canada).  Denmark is #1 and I've never heard of Danish balls...

Invest in some condoms. If you ever happen to get laid it will minimise the possibility of any Mini Incredibles roaming the planet, therefore doing about 6 Billlion people a massive favour in the process!!!

For legal reasons, "I am not giving advice" we are just having a conversation.
The more liquid the market the better i.e. ASX not NZX even though the Aussie is overvalued.
Just had a great run on mining stocks, 45 percent in six months.
Okay, so the US is printing money, buying back its own loans.
This frees up banks worldwide to lend elsewhere, get rid of bad debts etc.
So I'm plunging for Aussie banks for the next 6 months to a year.
Also pick a figure, lock it in and forget about it.
