What are peoples thoughts on that home test summer?

Great series win over a Pakistan team who came to NZ ranked 2 (I think) but were obviously on a bit of a slide given what happened in Australia after they left us. Still a good series win and some tough situations got through to pull it off.

Efficient series win over a fast improving Bangladesh after getting ourselves into a bit of grief. Ground out wins after being in trouble which is a good sign.

South Africa series, more than in two of the tests and with great chances to win at least one of them if rain hadn't intervened. Losing 1 - 0 to a very good side nothing to be ashamed of given wider circumstance and in the knowledge of what they had done to Australia in Australia in November.

If you had asked what the questions were over the side going into the summer, have we answered them?

Raval as the second opener - sorted.

Nichols at 5 - has been improving slowly and showing signs of being good enough. Great century under pressure. Done enough to give him another season or two but could do with kicking on.

Allrounder spot -  I'm not convinced on De Grandhomme anywhere but New Zealand. Anderson being back will give us another option. Is Santner an allrounder as a 6 or is he a spinner that bats a bit. All part of the puzzle. Not answered but we have some options who I think are of decent quality.

Spinner - probably depends a bit on your answer to the previous question. But the question isn't answered.

Really think we could do with a marquee series victory to cement this period of our test game, like the India series was for the McCullum team. England at home next summer gives us a great opportunity to do that against a team who have similar strengths but also similar weakenesses.

Guptill pushing for 5? Is De Grandhome a better 6 than Santner? Santner's technique against Philander was not great. Thought Patel made top batsmen look silly in a way that only Boult of our other bowlers does. He's clearly the real deal. His arm ball against Dumminy was fantastic- it just kept coming and coming.

It's that time again! My team, the mighty Onslow Originals, is gearing up for the new season with an aim of moving back to Two Day cricket after a season sabbatical in the One Day grades.

We're looking for players with a social mind set, but also a love of the game and some degree of talent to join us.

We have a brilliant team culture, there is a brewer in the team, we have a sponsor and I do all of the organising so all you have to do is turn up on the day.

Drop me a message if you are interested, hit me up on Twitter or just reply here. Cheers, Leigh

I missed the announcement that Afghanistan and Ireland have been given test status. I think it's great personally, and the Afghan story in particular is amazing. Can't wait for both these teams to tour here, reckon they'll have some fun fans

Meanwhile, NZ is effectively handing back our test status.  We have 2 Tests V. West Indies as the first two games of the summer, and 2 Tests v. England as the last two games.  In between we have 24 limited overs games.  There is 5 ODI 3 T20 series against Pakistan FFS.  Do we need 8 limited overs games and no tests against Pakistan?

So pissed off at the lack of test matches in that schedule. 2 test series are a token joke, and we only have 4 tests total.

Not sure how there can be a valid Test Championship until all teams are scheduled to play the same number of games over a period

I know I go on about our declining respect for test cricket a lot, but this quote from the NZC Chairman really depressed me

"It's far more logical for us to play two-test and even one-test series, and certainly no more than three

Yep, 1 test, 5 ODI 7 T20 tours.  That sounds fantastic.  We could play less tests in the year than the big 3 play in a series.  That is definitely the path to good cricket.  That will help Williamson continue on being one of the worlds premier batsman.

Yeah I shuddered at that quote too: obviously the words of a bean counter, not a person with any kind of respect for cricket. just $$$$$$...so depressing

What a bloody good effort against India last night. Boult's bowling. Latham an unbeaten century, Taylor unlucky on 95.

In 17 years of club cricket and 6 as captain, I've never seen such crappy behaviour as to what we put up with yesterday. I'm glad CW have introduced a post-game review system for the lower grades and just hope that they now do something with the information we provide.

When the opposition captain tells you they aren't given anyone out as they think some of our LBW decisions were wrong, you have a mountain to climb...and climb it we did.

Looking forward to the Ashes next week, though without Ben Stokes I expect Australia to win the series with relative comfort, even though they don't have a great side either. But Hazlewood and Starc in Australia are still pretty damn good and could easily rip through England's newish batting line up at times.

Gonna be another 5-0. How poor are England?

Three for me, and two for them.

England have fought back incredibly here. Aussie still favourites but they've put themselves in a real good position after dominating day 4.

Three for me, and two for them.

Having 4 radio station options for the Ashes might seem a bit of an overkill...but it's great being able to change stations easily whenever Glen McGrath is on-air.

Steve Smith.

That is all!

Smith is a remarkable player...has zero batting "culture" (think of a Martin Crowe or a Kohli etc for batting culture)...I think Boycott said Smith was one of the worst batsmen he'd ever seen when he debuted...now he averages over 60, some 60 tests later...shi*...

Yeah Smiths technique leave a lot to be desired and he plays with his hand so far away from his body they are on the next block over but it is effective and he scores runs so shows what we know.

The role is too much work for a Fleming or Vettori when they can work 6 weeks in India for the same amount. I could see Fleming as the short form coach

The obvious candidate is McMillan for the sake of continuity. He is in the role and its a progression. As long as he keeps the boof factor to a low low low
