I think the thread generally goes pretty quiet for limited overs stuff and livens back up for tests.

Just saw Williamson got 145, must have been a great knock.  2 crazy runouts (and one very ballsy decision from an umpire) and we are in it again.

Time to jump onto the Black Caps bandwagon?

Try five run outs! Eyes glued to Cricinfo at the moment. Work productivity = 0.

No sponsors on the Black Caps uniforms?   Time to start believing again corporate New Zealand...

Wow. 2/2. Wasn't expecting that! Great fielding performance, and top knock by Williamson.

Brilliant result, caught the last ten overs. Sooooo many run outs.

Our whole office was glued to the TV watching the last few overs, I can't remember the last time people did that for the Black Caps.

Happy that we won the ODI series, even if it doesn't really matter.

Three for me, and two for them.

Great knock from Kane, highest ever score against a decent side, while Kyle is stil a great ODI bowler. Apparently this is the first time South Africa have lost consecutive home matches, if so that's bloody impressive.

wish someone had told Kane he was going to get dropped before the test series. worked a charm on Rosco in Sri Lanka too.

I usually have a fair bit to say regardless but been too busy for a week or so.

Fuck this stupid game

Just glad I watched the first one- you know we are capable, we've just not been doing it for so long.

as for tests Taylor at 3, Guppy should bat 4, McCullum at 5 for me. Not sure what big Jess is doing...but we do need two openers. Watling could be one, though it's a tough ask for him to keep too. Munro could be one to hang onto- but just seems to go hard at everything- we don't want him facing a second new ball again. I'd bracket Munro/Jess if Jessie can bowl a few.

Still think Williamson should be sent back to get more runs in domestic competition, but maybe his form will flow over.

Martin ahead of Wagner. (On the playing New Zealanders in New Zealand on the basis that they will do well there theory...!!) Too many left armers, and not enough good ones. At times Wagner has impressed, but he's been too slow and/or hasn't done enough with the ball to take wickets, as well as giving up a fair few runs.

Permalink Permalink

Yeah I'm not too sure on the Wagner era, poor Tom hasn't done anything wrong.

Kane averages 70 in domestic cricket, I think he's done all the proving and run scoring that he needs to, it's just a matter of patience at the test level, he'll score runs. Dropping/resting him wouldn't help, he'd score a truckload no matter the circumstances so form wouldn't be an factor.

Williamson's record...

eh? says here 40 odd average...was that in a particular season or something?

I mean it is all fairly relative, as Munro was averaging 160 or something, but quite clearly didn't have the technique to last against the new ball in the hand of good fast bowlers on bowler friendly wickets.

Williamson looks the goods, but hasn't been producing anywhere near enough.

Well he averaged over 100 last season I think so no haha, I was looking at his one-day record, averages 62 in domestic one-dayers, my bad.

Point remains - I think he's the no.1 project who we should stick by, especially when everyone else is performing at the same level in the test arena. Let's not get too hasty, especially when you think who on earth we could bring in to replace him.

*cough* match-fixing *cough* Hansie Cronje *cough*

Amla injured at the last minute, South Africa have 5 runouts in an innings, Black Caps get a completely unexpected series victory in a format no one cares about anymore. Questions will be asked?!

:P

I think NZ should care much more about limited overs forms of the game as we've been utterly shite at tests for a long time now!

Permalink Permalink

I care, in that I like us to win. Winning a series of any sort in South Africa is a pretty reasonable effort. Especially considering the team contained guys like Munro and Neesham.

You would always prefer test match success but I will take any we can get at the moment.

Imagine Arsenal getting relegated while winning a couple of league cup games.  Probably wouldn't be much consolation.

Yeah not *quite* the same.

Daniel Flynn with a ton as opener for ND, Fulton doesn't make many, I know it's not the greatest solution but if it comes down to between those two for the job I think Flynn has the clear nod.

You can bet he's opening for that exact reason. No longer any room in the middle order.

I would definitely take Flynn over Fulton!  Don't know if Flynn is the answer, but having said that, I can't think of anyone else that would be better.

I think the main thing with Flynny is that he needs to take his natural aggressiveness with him when he plays for the BlackCaps, for instance at the moment he's slaying it, 25 fours and two sixes, 165 not out, when he gets to the national level he tends to play more defensively, it's not his natural game and even if he bats well he might get a ripper and be gone for only 30 or so. So that would be my hope for him.

Trouble is, that's not exactly what we need out of a test opener at the moment. Otherwise you may as well leave McCullum there who would do exactly the same thing but better.

Bring back rigger.

This. We need a Mark Richardson type opener but it seems it's a dead breed these days. Tim Macintosh was the last one to be tried but he was no where near good enough.

Doesn't have to be Richardson, just someone who values their wicket and can accumulate...you know a batsman!

T20 has killed that type of batsman unfortunately. Its very rare for a batsman to train themselves to bat like that anymore I'd imagine.

Are there shorter boundries straight of the wicket in world cricket than Eden Park?  First time I've seen basically forward defensive pushes go for six...
