There's a new HP one out thats got good reviews.

Whatever you guys buy, have extra ram added, you want at least 4 gig of ram these days. 1 gig for Windows 7 or that crap Vista operating systems. And if the laptop has "Shared" video ram, that means the video card shares the same ram as everything else. hence getting 4 gig will make everything run very smoothly.

Just got an Acer Aspire 5536 (superceded by the 5538) and it is great. 4GB, 320GB, 16:9 screen and lots of great other features. Only cost me $1100 (new version is about $1300 at JB Hifi). Has memory on board for video and sound so 4GB goes a hell of a long way.

Its no longer a problem.

Its an AMD X2 2.1. I looked at the Compaq but heard about their reliability issues. A laptop specialist I used to work with said that 90% of repairs were Compaq when only 50% of sales were.

Its no longer a problem.

Great spec for a good price and decent reliability. Plus the 16:9 display ratio and "surround sound speakers" are great for movies. Internals are pretty much the same on this level machine (Seagate drives, Kingston memory, Intel/AMD cpu's, ATI graphics etc) but the screens are the main difference in my opinion. Even motherboards are getting standardised. My model also has HDMI and VGA output, 6 USB ports and extended range 802.11a wifi. However don't expect massive battery life from home user laptops. 3 hrs max (my work one gets 5-6 hrs).

Its no longer a problem.

Acer and Hewlett Packard produce decent laptops,  I'm doubtful about Dells, Toshibas. Sony's Vaio's are good but too friggen expensive for what you get. Like buying a Mactop. great machine that would win the war hands down if they were 500-1500 dollars cheaper.

The Dell has a smaller screen, less memory, smaller HDD and are notoriously unreliable.
If you want I can bring in my Laptop on Monday and you can have a look at it.

Its no longer a problem.
