So what do you think?

Will it create a black hole that will vapourise the earth, or will it just be another physics experiment?

It would be quite nice to know, then I could maybe not bother doing the four massive assignments I have due in the next month.

I'll get back to you in about 8 days Bevan

I hope

I know nothing about physics, but something about smashing sub-atomic particles together at the speed of light and seeing what happens. Some people are trying to get an injunction put on it so its delayed, as they don't really want the end of the world to come.

There was an article about it in Time a couple of months ago, they hope to find the Higgs Boson, the fundamental building block of particle physics, which allows seemingly massless elementary particles somehow create mass in matter.

It's either going to be a world enlightening discovery that may lead to some very important scientific information or we'll not exist in a micron of a second!

I thought there was a spelling mistake in the title of this thread until I Googled "Hadron".  Thank god for that.  I was thinking that's gotta hurt.  Now I know it's a particle accelerator.

If it did make a black hole, which I'm kinda hoping they do, the only problem would occur if Hawking is wrong and there is no such thing as Hawking Radiation, and then it'll be a long time before anything major happens, like sucking in France, because it will only be a micro black hole, it'll take a while to get big, so sorry Paulinho, those assignments will still have to be done.

There's several things they want to achieve.

They want to create dark matter (aka anti-matter) and then see how it reacts with matter (like a tiny Big Bang) to try and explain why there is so little dark matter in the universe.
They also want to observe the Higgs field which is a theoretical field that is used to explain why things have mass.

There's even a rap about it.

We'll find out soon enough, they're firing it up in a few weeks...

Stable micro black holes FTW.

EDIT* btw, it alreadys sucks in France Orilla...

This Wednesday Morning NZT I believe is the test time. Well, just incase it f**ks up, it was nice knowing you all. We might not have agreed on everything, but I did value your input.

What was that song at the start of Independence Day?? "Is this is the end of the world as we know it?" were the lyrics heard!!

Hah, maybe this is why sub-consciously i've been thinking about death and the afterlife the past few days. Because sub-consciously i know it's coming.

Too bad i never made it to 3000 posts....

Of all the things to not have achieved in a short life I'd like to think there are more important ones than 3000 posts???

I know man has to advance his knowledge by pushing the boundaries of the unknown but at what price?

Attention Tony P. If this experiment goes drastically wrong and we're wiped out, can I have a refund on my season ticket?

Ah yes, every time there's a nuclear explosion, there's a theoretical risk that we will all be consumed in a new sun.  A bit like that old joke, two brothers, one joined the navy and went to sea and the other became the Vice President of the United States, neither were heard nor seen ever again.  There was a particle accelerator and a haldron collider.....
How will we tell?  I guess the web link to European football will drop out first, thus making NZ the leading footie nation after all.

i heard a scientist on Kim hill one saturday explain the risk roughly as follows:

"It is more important from a safety point of view that urgent action is taken by governments world-wide to ban wardrobes -

because the risk of a citizen entering one and ending up in Narnia is greater than any threat posed by the collider"

This is rather disappointing. I wish more people would panic like hell a la Y2K over this LHC rubbish. I need some entertainment from morons. Buffon II2008-09-09 22:03:35

Being of the more knowledgeable scientist variety, I just love how heaps of people think the world is going to end. Personally, I kinda hope they do make a black hole. It'll be fun.
Also, they looking for the Higgs Boson, hence the Higgs Field. Is this the new ether kind of thing?

But team member Professor Brian Cox once the keyboardist with pop group D:Ream said the experiment posed no danger to the public.

"Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a twat," he told the Telegraph.
