Law Commission look at drug use.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

The Law Commssion have just finished a review of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975. http://www.lawcom.govt.nz/ProjectIssuesPaper.aspx?ProjectID=143

It prompted immediate reaction from the government. Including

Mr Key told Radio Live today that reform was not the agenda.

"No one is probably arguing necessarily that if someone uses a small amount of marijuana that that is necessarily of itself the end of the world," Mr Key said

"But, and I have to acknowledge because its factually correct that a lot of New Zealanders do, but what's the message we want to send youngsters? And the message is don't engage with drugs."

Marijuana was often a stepping stone to more aggressive drugs such as P or cocaine, he said.
and
"There's not a single, solitary chance that as long as I'm the Minister of Justice we'll be relaxing drug laws in New Zealand," he said.

Key's comment is interesting as the gateway to "harder" drugs is not Marijuana but, wait for it, alcohol... Something that I guess a lot of people may not realise.

Thing is though, the argument that any from of decriminalisation normalises non-taxable drugs in the eyes of youth is a pretty hard one to disagree with, and one that will ensure that the current archaic laws are entrenched for generations to come.

It'll always be the number one argument that is put up against decriminalisation, because it reduces the arguement from the actual facts and civil liberty issues, to one of "you don't care about the kids", and it's a losing battle against that kind of mentality.

I think the fact that it's even being raised is a step forward though, even though some of the valid points the Commision raised will no-doubt be flat out ignored by the current Govt.

Still don't think that anyone has the right to tell me what I put into my own body, but can't see the current criminalsation or prosecutions relating to non-taxable drugs changing any time soon.

If we were to legalise ALL drugs what would happen?

gangs of crazed thugs will roam the streets
our moral decline will be complete

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

You had me up to here.

Fine, put what you like into your body, but don't expect me to provide a health system to deal with the fallout.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

But the health system already deals with the fallout. Health care is available and funded regardless of what got you there.

In any case, the numbers of people with health complications resulting from legal drugs like alcohol and tobacco would far outweigh those related to other non-legal drugs.

The fact that there is a law that criminalises peoples freedom of personal choice regarding what they ingest is my main issue.

Interesting piece on Nat Radio on Monday about the prevalence and insidious entrenchment of MJ in East Cape and how this was an underlying factor in the road toll rate there (i.e. not just alcohol).

I don't see any benefit from decriminalising but would entertain the idea of legalising it if the govt could then tax the sh!t out of it and use the money for rehabilitation/education prgrammes.  Somehow i don't think that would be cost-effective.
