MAC vs PC - Which is Better??

I need to buy a new laptop and am unsure if I should invest in a Mac or stick with the HP, Dells or Compaqs of the world.

Any potential pitfalls or advantages?

I don't want to do anything fancy on it.  Just want a computer that won't need replacing for a long time.

I was hoping these ads would help me, but they didn't.

PCs are also a butt load cheaper and, i'm assuming here, but upgrading will be the cheap also.

not any real decision to be made here, just the choice between different pc's :)

why did you consider a mac in the first place?

Totally depends on your needs which as you have stated you dont want to do to much, so I would go with a PC - cheaper than macs at the lower end and hardware performance at the moment for cheap pc's will meet all your demands which I suppose is email, internet and the watching movies/listening to music. Even integrated graphics from Intel will allow for HD output.

New windows operating system out next month, may be good to hold off till then. Or if you feeling a little adventurous try a free linux os, I installed Ubuntu (new version also out next month) on my flatmates laptop and he really likes, much more than vista and he just uses it for email, internet, movies, music and guitar tabs.

I think investing in a Mac is a pretty good investment unless you run quite specialized software that is say XP or Vista based, that being said you can dual boot a Mac to run windows.

I bought a macbook pro last year for its matte screen and better capability using design software. Best computer I have had. The new macbooks I don't like as much because of its glass shiny screen, as with the previous non pro versions. So it is quite a big investment to get one brand new in the $3,500 mark, although I paid less than that and got more stuff too. But since it's something I look at everyday I think it's worth it.

I suggest try and get a laptop with an Inter processor, Intel Core 2 Duo being what to look for (rather than the old Intel Core Duo or Pentium Core Duo), but if you are just using it for email and surfing then an AMD one is good.

Macs are used by pretentious w**kers, so if you do not want to look like on of them buy a PC.

you can thank me later.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite

Info school at Vic provided us with the RTM of 7 a few weeks back and it is A-MAZ-ING. Still missing a few of the unfinished beta products like XP Mode but everything else i can think of is there.

of note, if you buy a HP notebook you get a free upgrade to windows 7 when it comes out.

A lot of manufacturers are offering this, something Microsoft organised

http://www.microsoft.com/nz/windows/buy/offers/upgrade.aspx

Just take note of the upgrade options, because I think if you get Vista Basic it will only upgrade to Windows 7 basic (or equivalent).

The reasons I was considering a Mac was because they're not susceptible to Viruses they way PC is and I was told you don't need virus protection/shield.  I heard they don't freeze up.  Even though Macs are pricey I thought it was easier to upgrade.  Windows always seem to have bugs and need patches.

Thanks for the advice

That is a bit myth. While Macs are generally safer there are still a large number of viruses out there that can cripple your system. You will basically always need virus protection if you are connected to the internet.

From what I hear some linux systems are the safest in terms of virus vulnerability.

Confused yet?

yeah, they're called "stupidity". Stuff like sudo rm -rf /.

There's only one that I'm aware of, and it needed to be installed by the user (it was hidden inside some illegal downloads of popular software). It's also a trojan, not a virus.

Macs are safer, and from what I've heard, don't slow down over time the way Windows does
(with Windows you should do a complete reinstall every 2 years at least in order to keep your system as fast as it used to be)
I've never owned a Mac though so can't confirm this first hand.

Macs are also easier to use.

I stick with Windows mostly for the games; I could use a Mac happily for most other reasons.

PC with Linux distribution is best for making things cheap. I have Linux Ubuntu with Wine installed and I can play most windows games. Also it has free alternatives to all basic windows software. ie free office suite, games CD/DVD writing software...

Only problem I've had so far is that FM 2009 is near on impossible to install.

That's reads like the old school speights TV advert for nerds.

I used PCs for years, and switched to Mac a couple of years ago. I would definitely never go back.  Macs are far more stable, user-friendly, etc.

I've used mine for ages, and never had virus protection, and never had a virus (though I have run virus checks, just to be safe). My macbook was a piece of piss to ugrade, just installed a new hard drive and some new RAM, and stuck on Snow Leopard, was 100 times easier than trying to fiddle about with my PC's motherboard and cable and blah blah blah.

Things just work on a Mac, in the way things seem to inevitably fail on a PC. Yes, they're more expensive, but I reckon buying a PC is a bit of a false economy as you'll end up spending more time repairing it, and ultimately will probably replace or substantially upgrade it before you would with a Mac.

Also, with snow leopard, you can run Windows, should you miss it. Haven't tried it yet, because Windows is for the gays, innit?

You'll have to throw it on the ground and smash it when the sponsorship ends!

This Mac-PC thing is almost like Holden-Ford, Marmite-Vegemite debates. Pointless (unlike Celtic-Rangers, Toon-Mackems, Utd-City, Pyul-Toffees etc).

One's cheaper and liable to crash on you after a few years, the other's almost twice as much and you have to learn a new layout and keystrokes.

Give me a TRS 80 any day (except ones ending in y).
