Is there any chance that a smaprtphone version of the forum (optimised for iPhone and Android devices etc) could be made?

At the moment the forum is really hard to use on the smaller screen devices, and some of us can't be at a computer all the time, but have smartphones that can access the internet.

I don't think 24/7 YF forums is in the best interest for anyone. A life is also key to happiness.Luis Garcia2011-03-14 22:43:44

haha this is true, however it could be justified by allowing the Fever Zone to easily access the forum while at home games...

Ah okay. Maybe you could use a forum template that has a mobile version built in to reduce the amount of work required to get it to work?

I'm happy to offer my web design services if they are wanted.

I was thinking this just today. The forum is a real bitch on the iPhone!

Its not that bad. Perhaps a bit slow loading at times, and probably kills bandwidth a little more than it should.

Allegedly

The forum is actually really hard to navigate on the IDEOS due to the small screen...

iPhones are the greatest things since sliced bread.

If you personally can't afford one, goto Ebay Australia and wait till you find a good deal like I did

An iPhone/Android app would be amazing. Anyone know how to write them?

I've done a fair bit of programming in my time, only really stopped about a year ago.

Thinking about it, an iPhone app would somewhat be a waste of time because YF would need to setup its own API and such, which isn't really economical when compared to the ease of just making another website layout.

/nerdy rant

Then again I could be wrong. :)20 legend2011-03-15 13:14:08

What we really need right now is a web developer.

A free one.

Anyone know one?

The lads at YeahBoi.net are keen to re-design for us, but design only gets us part of the way there.

Also, we use forum software that we can't really change (the database holding all the forum info isn't easily ported to another forum product) so don't hold your breath for a reformatting of the forum.

If however someone wanted to write a mobile app to interact with the forum database then they are welcome to contact me: mail@guysmith.co.nz

Smithy.

With the iPhone App, it seems you need a Mac to code one (which I don't have; and all window alternatives either cost to much or don't work). I did however do a little digging and found an API for this forum on the developer's website. (link) So if I can indeed find a way to make the Apps on Windows I'll send Smithy an email because I've decided its very possible and shouldn't be too hard.

With the website, are you guys wanting a new look forum or just the website?20 legend2011-03-15 15:56:18

So so so much this. About time he did some pro-bono work for the man who helped him rekindle his football career at the Night Hawkes?

New look but mostly it would be nice of all the bits worked!

Since Browny moved to Auckland we've not had much resource in the maintenance and development space (note, this is the understatment of the decade).

Regardless of his Nighthawkes appeareances (or lack of) I'm sure Cody's footballing pinacle was seen in the two games of futsal he and I played together for News's Numpties.  We made sweet sweet music as an attacking combo.

Trentham United.  The current Nighthawks incarnation is only two seasons old.

Can I just say the forum still looks great even after a few years (vastly superior to many others). Please don't change the look too much!

Well I could code the layout but no promises whether I will have enough time to integrate it into the forums' template system.
