I've got one, hugely underrated.
Everyone knows them for Turning Japanese. The Vapors were an incredible power-pop band that were, sadly, written off by most after their supposed inability to follow up thir number one hit. This is absolutely criminal. Listen to New Clear Days or Magnets, their two albums, both are brilliant. Turning Japanese was a novelty hit (and one of the only songs about w**king to ever make it big, so to speak) but they had so much more in their musical arsenal.
A fantastic band, The Vapors.

Two of that same era readily come to mind. First the Comsat Angels. Second, Theatre of Hate.

Why?

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I was listening to a band called the Beatles, who seem pretty good.  I don't think a lot of people have heard of them.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Beatles, eh? Oh yes, I seem to remember their off-key caterwauling on the old Ed Sullivan Show. What was Ed thinking?

I genuinely don't understand why Kylie doesn't get more recognition as an artist.

If you saw her live in knee high boots like i did, you would agree with me.

ToH are one of my favorite bands of alltime. Only a few weeks ago I got a ToH tshirt off eBay. I've got most of the ToH singles, including a few of The Pack's releases. And even better, I absolutely adore early Spear of Destiny. The Wheel and Flying Scotsman are a couple of the mid-eighties most underrated singles.
And the Comsat Angels? All I can name is Indendence Day and Do The Empty House. Great tracks both.

The Pack's releases? I hadn't thought about them in a while. I've got, somewhere, a cassette of one of their gigs. I'm on to it... the search begins... got one single but can't remember it's title.
I've got a ToH collection. Probably the most complete of any band I've listened to. Was, god I'm sad, listening to them in the car earlier.
I had a friend Steve who introduced me to the Comsats... played the album near to death. Funny how some sounds just strike that chord. Bit like Kylie's evil twin (above). Heard her for first time in 1982 and am hooked.

For me, one band I stumbled across that did not really meet many people into were Dispatch. Really rate them, but didn't hit the heights I initially thought they would

Default-Canadian guys with a lead singer who started singing to try and spend more time with his mates. Bloody legends.

Alex Zilinski owns a recording studio and plays lead guitar, he appears in several not well known groups. Check his site out and listen to some clips.

He and Robby Thomas Walsh (vocals - Is very similar to Ian Gillan) formed Blue Jade . Robby also sings for Purpendicular  Whom are a Deep Purple tribute band.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

we had a few americans in our hostel in first year who we got on with quite well and they introduced us to dispatch. they're huge with american college kids apparently. never signed to a big label, and they also had the biggest independent concert of all time from what i just read on wikipedia.

Yea their American (Dairyflat), and the last concert they had was canned food donation, so they are pretty cool people. The fact they didnt want to and did not sign a big label kept them out of the mainstream of music, but I guess that is what they wanted! The album Bang Bang rules, if you can get your hands on it.

Leatherface are the most underrated band of all time.

Lots of people can't get past Frankie Stubb's gruff vocals (he makes Jake Burns sound like a choirboy) and the crappy production on some of their LPs, but underneath the surface lies pure gold.

The interplay between Frankie Stubbs and Dickie Hammond's guitars is easily the best dynamic between two guitarists in a band that I've ever heard. And they are great song-writers to boot.

One of the very few bands that I can listen to over and over again and never get tired of.

Leatherface. F*ck yeah.

I get goose pimples everytime I hear 'Peasant in Paradise'. Brilliant live too, 'cos they just get on with it. HarryHotspur2008-09-05 19:29:38

Not a band but I kind of thought that Neneh Cherry deserved more of an audience than she got (which was pretty big anyway). I saw her first in Rip Rig & Panic way back in 1982.  She was well pregnant and started off one track by having all the lights off, a single white light on her, and screaming "you shot your sperm into me..." Silenced one bolshie crowd in one go.
Then five years (was it) later popped up with Buffalo Stance. In my book "pop genius".

o.k bite, their star maybe on the wain, but their not overrated, they've put out some pretty solid stuff,Winning 3 grammys for best rock album is a pretty decent effort in itself.
Fall out boy now that's overrated

My most underrated band was going to be Elbow from manchester but they just won the mercury award for best album "the seldom seen kid"
