National Debt - YIKES!
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

At 86% of GDP, New Zealands national debt is the highest among all developed nations except Iceland. And Icelands banking system has collapsed.

You need to distinguish between Government debt and debts of NZers to foreign lenders.

Govt debt is low, about 20% of GDP.  Its forecast to go up, but not that much.  In 1987 it was 75% and most OECD countries are still around this level.

NZ national debt is however large, 86% sounds plausible.  Much of this is owed by the banks (who are foreign owned, but it still counts as NZ debt) who have borrowed abroad to fund lending to NZers.  So, in a round about sort of way, part of your mortgage is foreign debt.
