Farm day is run by Federated Farmers to give the city public a chance to see what actually happens on a farm. We farmers tend to get a lot of bad press when something goes wrong (eg the Crafers shambles, or someone getting ticked off for poor effluent management) but not many realize that these are actually very isolated incidents. This is a chance for people to get out there and see what it is we actually do, and to ask farmers questions about how certain things can go wrong and what is actually done to prevent problems. Also it's good for kids to learn what farming is all about and to see animals (from what I can tell it's mostly cows). You never know, you might learn something or even come across something you're interested in yourself.

I don't know whether to be ashamed or proud of knowing it should be Crafar.  I've been to their Reporoa farm a few times.
