What time is the Russki game? do we dare dream of an 02 like run to the semis?

I was actually surprsed that the 02 FIBA champs weren't invoked when the All Whites were doing well, cos in terms of NZ Sporting upsets that must be up there

If we did it at the Olympics then people will talk.

Three for me, and two for them.

Nope just the usa and nash from canada, european teams had their full squads.

France's Tony Parker.
Germany's Chris Kaman & Dirk Nowitzki
Spain Pau Gasol
Argentina's Manu Ginobili
Brazil's Nene Hilario
Russia's Andriy Kirilenko
Turkey's Mehmet Okur
New Zealand's Sean Marks

and lots more, all the above are All-Star level talent. And Parker is a NBA Finals MVP, and Dirk a former MVP (2007). So yeah heaps of talent missing.

Yeah, pretty much everyone has weakened/almost B teams (not sure about Africans and Asians). One of the reasons why the results have been so crazy.

Lost to Russia 78-56 in the last 16 round overnight. Ruskies go on to play the Yanks in the quarters now.

I saw Kirk Penny had a quick 1 min mention on NBA.com / NBA TV about his effectiveness and the fact that he could be a good pick up for an NBA team looking for an impact shooter.

He's always had that potential/pedigree so its good to see him still being mentioned in that conversation.

But I hope he stays and plays for the Breakers though - Penny, Abercrombie gonna be huge for the Breakers.

US take care of the Ruskies, up against Lithuania in the semis now who took care of the Argies.

The other semi has the Turks against the Serbs. The Turks held them in check for about 500 years, so hopefully can do the job again...

Kirk Penney is working out with the San Antonio Spurs and Sean Marks is also trying to win a contract with the Washington Wizards.

If they both make the cut, then we will have two New Zealanders in the NBA again (the same two), although it's hard to see them being more than end of the bench types, human-victory-cigars, injury crisis cover.

Two weeks ago I read that Kirk Penney was in talks with Maccaby Tel-Aviv. He is in the list of candidates to join Israel club.

Penney missed out, he's back at Breakers. He just doesn't have enough up-side to be a top player or even a good bench contributor. Mainly because of his lack of ability on defence, too slow laterally, undersized as a two guard and not athletic enough.

First day of the season today, Boston Celtics defeated the new Miami Heat big three: Bosh, Wade and James.

Also, LeBron tried to rehab his image in this ad

wth, they win the minor premiership and only get one of the league awards???

good luck to the Breakers, hope they win it all!

It depends on how the awards are looked at. In the NBA the MVP candidate has to be on a team that is winning (also likely to contend) and leading there team to victories as well as having a statistically strong year.

No point giving it to a player who is hoarding stats of a crap team, because even though you have stats in your team you are not that valuable in winning.

This year Derrick Rose, is the leading candidate as his team is top of the East and he is taking over games and averaging 25-4-8 (although only shooting 44%).

I also think that LeBron should be running Rose close, but he has had a terrible year in terms of PR. But he left the Cavaliers, who last year were the best team, are now the worst team in the league. And with him at the Heat, they are strong and contenders and he is average 27-8-7.

MVP is kinda silly. Because the best player in the league is Bron, but he isn't the most valuable.

As for the breakers, I laughed at Lemanis, he's been awful for so long, don't rate him at all. Obviously the voting panel thought the same. Kirk a bit ripped off, Khazzouh shouldn't have been getting votes

Lakers are out. I'm quite shocked

When was the last time that has happened?

Lakers were back to back champs, and going out to the Mavs who have always seemed to underachieve every year, and have a squad that most would deem to be aging and over the hill now (Like Kidd, Stojakovic, Marion, Terry), but this year's playoffs they've been on fire.

Anyone else following the NBA Finals, been an epic series so far (well games 2 and 3).

Huge comebacks from the Dallas Mavericks in both the last two games, one they won the other they missed a chance to tie at the buzzer.

Dirk has been carrying the Mavericks with little help (although the other players are playing well, but no-one else is really at current all star level) and the Miami Heat 'Big Three' (LeBron, Wade and Bosh) just playing well.

Miami lead best of 7, 2-1

NBA video and NBA's Youtube have great mini movies of the first two games. Their production values and story telling are the best of any sport.

Another tight game, another big comeback from Dallas and another game that went down to the last possession.

Dirk came up with another good game, but got good help from Terry, Marion and Chandler.

Series tied at 2-2 now.
