Anyone see the article in the Wellingtonian?

Some guy is selling t-shirts that have a pic of the Newtown Park Flats with the phrase- Newtown-its a bit sh*t

Apparently they are selling fast.
Well, i have lived in Newtown on and off for 8 years and i have to agree with the sentiment, but for me it is the only suburb that excites me.

All the things that make it a bit sh*t (the loonies, the refugees, the bizarre melange of cultures) are also the things that make it special, funny and colourful. it is the only Wgtn suburb that reminds me of some of the stranger british high streets like Kilburn or St Pauls, Bristol. and on fair day it is up there with Camden.

Plus it has Newtown Park, Home of Team Wgtn and Phoenix!

Frankly the posh suburbs of Wgtn; Kelburn,Khandallah, Wadestown et al bore the crap out of me.

yep, Newtown is a bit sh*t and i expect a litany of sh*tiness to come forth from you now, but in the interests of fair debate- what do you like about Newtown, and what scares the bezajus out of you.

I've seen that TShirt, its gold! I also live in Newtown and love the looniness of it all. My flat is next to a mental health day centre, some good laughs are had.
The carpark behind McDonalds at night time does put the sh*ts up me though

I use to be a postie in Newtown & I was glad we never delivered at night !!  Having said that, it is a colourful place in more ways than one.  I can tell you that the annual Newtown Fair is better than the now boring Thorndon Fair - more ethnic food.

id like to say yes, not knowing Aranui very well (i know its ruff) but i suspect the answer is no, and that is the point. Newtown is unique in NZ i reckon- some Auckland suburbs like Grey Lynn, Newton and Roskill might be similiar but Newtown is Newtown

I thought Grey Lynn and Kingsland, but maybe Grey Lynn 10 years ago is closer.

The other thing is that the t-shirt is in fact a direct result of a sort of urban drift to the south, where  students and inner city hippies are increasingly calling places like N-Town, B-pOre, Island Bay and Kilbirnie home.

What the tshirt is saying is that despite all the cafes, hosue parties and hep cats it is still a place where the social outcats, the druggies, refugees and mental health consumers () congregate.

Its a kind of face facts statement i think.

Kingsland- thats the one i was thinking about.
unfortunately those suburbs have become frightfully overrun with Jaffas

Although I avoid walking through Newtown at night, at least it's got an interesting myriad of people and plenty of yum food.

I however, live in Berhampore and it is truly sh*t because it has the negatives of Newtown (scummy, poor, gang infested and so forth), without the positives (sure mavericks is nice but it starts and ends there)
You know we belong together...

The T.shirt is brilliant humorous  satire  and a great abstract to the kind of pretentious  t shirts  sold in some of the boutique clothes shops in the ecletic suburb of Newtown "I love Newtown"  with a cartoon couple kissing  ,dry wretched when I saw that one.
Apart from the brilliant " Hataitai I till I  die" shirt  I reckon "Newtown its a bit sh*t" is the ideal casual evening wear whilst sampling the bookbinders at the Ed Bar in Riddiford St  on Friday and Saturday nights and is gauranteed to get a conversation going ,the article in the Wellingtonian  wandered all over the place and as for that  miserable Wgtn city  council spokesman he  had obviously had his sense of humour removed when he was eight !
Other shirt ideas might include  "Karori its a bit swamped " or" Ngaio its nearly Kandalah" or "Chartwell its a bit Bretheren" or "Oriental parade its extremly rich"
Ill get back into my cage now good evening !

It's amazing that Wellington's Newtown has a very similar vibe to Sydney's Newtown but perhaps with quite a bit less 'pride' (of the rainbow variety), but still strongly alternative/boho.

I lived quite close to the Sydney Newtown for 3 years, living in Kilbirnie now - so yet again living close to a Newtown!

Newtown (NSW) also had a great Rugby League team- the Jets, who were a force in the early 80's
