NRL: Storm stripped of premiership points, titles

The Melbourne Storm have received the heaviest penalties in NRL history this evening as a result of salary cap breaches believed to have dated over three to four years.

The club has been stripped of two premiership titles, two minor premierships, prize money and fined A$500,000.

The Storm has also been stripped of all 2010 premiership points and will not accrue any further points this season.

Melbourne Storm players bunkered down after training today as speculation mounted over the alleged breaches.

A senior Storm player had been due to speak to media following their skills session at Princes Park in Melbourne.

But the team hurriedly left the field in a group led by skipper Cameron Smith - said to be for a team meeting - and did not return.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy also left the session early. He was understood to have been summoned to a meeting, and left the training session to his assistants to run.

The events came after several bookmakers suspending betting on the NRL wooden spoon following a stream of bets for premier Melbourne to finish last.

Source?  If they're stripped of the titles the team who came second then gets awarded it I assume?  I'm pretty sure one of those years the Storm won the Warriors came 3rd.  Does that mean we get second place? loyalgunner2010-04-22 18:26:24

This is legit. This is huge. Also Probably a good time for A League teams to watch and if they are doing this to stop. Cough Gold Coast Cough.

No they dont get awarded to other teams.

They wont even be eligible for points at all this season, basically makes it a 15 team comp. If you're a Storm player how do you get up when there is nothing on it!

Just incredible stuff, Waldron who was the CEO and is now at the Rebels should be held civilly/criminally liable. Its just shocking!

So very much this!

Massive implications for Bellamy, no way he could not have known. Big impact for Rugby League, can't really see the Storm surviving and the toehold that league had in Victoria disappears. Maybe an opportunity for the Rebels but they will be tainted through association with Waldron.

I think the repurcussions of this wont be known completely for some time.

Former CEO Brian Waldron will cop the brunt of this, and I cuoldn't be happier.

I hate that bastard.

Doubt Bellamy or the players knew anything about this tbh.

It will be more than just a breeze, that's for sure!

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

If your Bellamy how can you not know? SUrely you have to sign off on how much you are willing to pay players and how much you are willing to sign them for...

So even if he wasn't complicit these kinds of sums are a bit difficult to miss I would think.

Wow that's huge news, but not surprising really they had to start from scratch and try to get a top team going as soon as possible to get the Victorian public behind them.

Same issue faced by the Nux though- and given they've (so far) managed to avoid anything salary cap related. Similar issues- start-up, trying to get the locals behind a more-foreign sport.

even though a warriors fan. This is not good for league in general. every year there is something major.

Hope we find out who and what was involved. Kiwis Adam Blair, Jeff Lima and Coach Kerny?

Can you continue to pick Cameron Smith as aussie captian if he knew all about this.

All Aboard the Phoenix/ All Whites Bandwagon!!

f**k me that is just insane about the storm. 2 prems 4 minors gone. wow. cant get over it and just cant imagine why on earth you would do that and expect to get away with it. though they have got away with it for 5 years. apparantly they concealed documents pertaining to extra payments away in a safe or something so the salary cap auditor wouldnt see them.

we got them this weekend too, they are either guna come out big time and blow us off the park or their minds wont be on it and hopefully we can get away with a win

We'll go with apples and pears. Victoria is very much an AFL stronghold, but NZ/Wellington is very much a rugby stronghold that the Nix were trying to muscle in on (although it is a given that football participation in Wellies was stronger than that of league in Melb). But anyway, no need for Nix to be brought into it- it's a real shame for league in general.

Thoughts around Seagulls and Eels not getting the premierships?

Rumour is that some folks lumped large on the Storm to win the wooden spoon last night so the betting agencies shut down betting.

From stuff.co.nz this morning before the BIG story broke:

A leading bookmaker has suspended betting on the NRL wooden spoon after fielding several bets for premiers Melbourne to finish last.

Title favourites Melbourne are currently fourth on the NRL ladder after four wins and two losses and have been the subject of a salary cap investigation.

"We took three bets to win $10,000 and another to win $8000 for the Storm to win the wooden spoon all within 10 minutes of each other this morning," said Sportingbet Australia spokesman Bill Richmond.

"You dont take a series of bets like that unless someone knows something and we have suspended betting on the wooden spoon as a result.

"Melbourne is now our worst result for the wooden spoon despite the fact they are premiership favourites."

In 2002, the Bulldogs were deducted 37 competition points and fined $500,000 after being found guilty of salary cap breaches totalling more than $1 million in two seasons.

It took the Bulldogs from the top of the table to eventual wooden spooners.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.
