The rising of the Phoenix outweighs all the bad IMHO

Would I swap the 'nix for victories for the All Blacks, the Kiwis, the Black Caps, Team NZ, the Silver Ferns, AND the Knights? Heck no!

agreed Robb, I used to care a bit about cricket and league and used to watch the AllBlacks cos my mates did

but now all those sports are merely competition for the Phoenix, so a far as I'm concerned they can lose

some folks might take issue with that perspective - that's cool, but it don't alter the fact that for me there's only the Nix, Team Welly, and my kids teams that i care about

Didn't we win some obscure sporting carnival that year?

Yea, and hence all the media absolutely love it. The more obscure, the better.

The media in NZ have been bonkers about rugger for a lot longer than 1987! Try 1887!

The problem is we have unrealistic expectations, that's why it seems that it's been a sh*t sporting year.
Of the supposed 'big' four competitions NZ teams played in in 2007, only the All Chokes really had a good chance of winning it. The netballers were clearly an inferior side to Oz, the stupid 'Team New Zealand' was never going to beat the rich guy's team, and cricket? Come on.
None of these teams deserved the hype they got from the media, yet it was inflated beyond belief.

Thank God (well, Terry, but he's God in my eyes) for the Nix. Now finally there's some real sport to follw and be passionate about.el grapadura2008-01-01 18:42:26

1981 and 1982 and every year until the mid 80s because we dominated Australia in footie and made it to THE world cup.
And having 30k crowds against Mainland China and Kuwait was pretty special.
The qualification matches started around Anzac Day 1981.  So a year of special memories.
