NZ troops in Afghanistan.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Been pondering on this all afternoon...

(a) Why are NZ troops in Afghanistan?
(b) This is the longest involvement that NZ troops have EVER had in a war and our media hardly ever mention them being there. Don't you find that a bit odd?

Allegedly they are over there rebuilding stuff that the yanks and the Taliban destroyed in the hope of restoring peace to the region. I didn't know the SAS were builders. Lonegunmen2008-11-01 11:46:27

gut rot, NZ troops have been in Afghanistan longer than they have been in any other conflict. They've been there SEVEN years. dairyflat2008-10-31 21:29:23

Well the Afganistan conflict was endorsed by the United Nations, which makes it technically legal (I know, a legal war!), whereas the Iraq war was most definitely not backed by the U.N. So we feel we are able to contribute to the war on terror in this way. And your right dairyflat, they have been there for a long time, but I guess they're not in peril danger all the time, so why mention them in the media? (sarcasm intended). The American media barely mentions Afganistan either, though at the mo all they talk about is politics.

Meh, they're not dieing so who cares. Why do we have a military that just sits around? I'd rather our military spending goes to putting these guys into use like they are trained to do! I love our role that our military plays, we don't go in to kill f*ckers, we go in to help, rebuild and restore. And the SAS gets all the assination gigs...YUS!!!
