OK Wellington based feverites- its time to get some culture up ya!

I have just started a contract at the New Zealand School of Music and the first thing that struck me was how many free music events these guys put on- So in the interests of public service & to try and stem the lager -lout stereotye of the average YF member (Feverish!) I am going to keep you informed of upcoming concerts.

The first is this Friday 28 May at 5.15 pm at the Ilott Theatre, Wgtn.

This is definetrly one for the culture vultures out there, and for those wanting to sample some of the best chamber music (the players are senior staff, not students ) in Wgtn for free:

Fridays at Five Concert One
Brahms Masterworks

Violin Sonata in A major, Zwei Gesange and Piano Quartet in G minor

Featuring distinguished members of staffDiedre Irons (piano), Martin Riseley (violin) Donald Maurice (viola), David Chickering (cello) and Margaret Medlyn (mezzo-soprano).

The concert is a very doable 60 minutes, and with a cash bar its the perfect way to start your weekend.

Cheers, hope to see you there

New Zealand School of Music premieres

The Red Violin in gala concert

Wellingtonians will be enchanted by the New Zealand premiere of The Red Violin, a score from the art house film of the same name, starring Samuel L. Jackson, which won the 1999 Academy Award for Best Original Score.

This John Corigliano work is presented by the New Zealand School of Music (NZSM) and performed by virtuoso violinist Martin Riseley, soprano Margaret Medlyn and conductor Hamish McKeich leading the NZSM Orchestra.

Martin Riseley, Head of Strings at the NZSM, performed the North American Premiere of The Red Violin with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and is pleased to bring this work to New Zealand.

Its a blast to play Martin says, the work has all sorts of extremes from very tender to very exciting.

Other feature works at the gala concert are the Prelude und Liebestod from Wagners Tristan and Isolde, Francesca da Rimini by Tchaikovsky and Nocturnes II (Ftes) and III (Sirnes) by Debussy.

Another highlight is the world premiere of Our Own Demise by Pieta Hextall, the winner of the 2009 Jenny McLeod Composition Prize at the NZSM.
