I can't wait for these, I think we have one of our strongest teams in a long time. We have a strong chance of getting up to 10 or so golds I think. I think Drysdale should be the flag bearer, 3 times world champion and so on. Great athlete. Only a week to go.

10 gold?  Doubt it.  We only got 5 medals last time.
Care to tell us who they will be.

Drysdale, Vili, Docherty, Evers-Swindell, Waddell/Cohen, Bridgewater/Twaddle, Evans/Burling, Burmester, Sarah Walker, Barbara Kendall and a few others are in the mix.
Doubt all of them will get gold but I reckon half of them at least will.

Will Steven Old be our Eric the Eel?

I just really doubt that they will all fire. I'd love to be proved wrong though

Rowing's schedule is a bit average so they may not even go to the Opening Ceremony. Stuff had an article on the flag bearing candidates - http://www.stuff.co.nz/4640071a26500.html

Olympic officials breathed a sigh of relief in the weekend as the smog lifted over Beijing. Photos / Getty Images

In what scientists are calling the single largest attempt ever made to improve air quality, scores of heavily polluting factories were shut down and some 2 million vehicles were pulled off roads across Beijing and a huge swath of northern China - an area roughly the size of Alaska. During the weekend, the hazy skies finally gave way to swirling blue.

Hazy skies cover Beijing
<!-- ASX and NZX from IRESS --><!-- Article -->Aug 4, 2008 6:48 PM

After five days of blue sky day and low pollution levels, the fog has rolled in and a cloak of smog hangs over the Olympic city.

The air around the Beijing Olympic village is thick, and affecting the athletes who have already made their arrival.

Beijing has poured billions into combating environmental problems, forcing thousands of cars off the roads.

On Monday, only even numbered licence plates were allowed hit the streets.

Medical experts say unless the smog clears, athletes are in danger of severe asthma attacks and skin conditions.

Some experts say the air quality is the equivalent of smoking seventy cigarettes a day.

"It's been a bit of a shock to the system, I think a lot of the guys have been really struggling, just finding it hard to breathe, there's been a lot of coughing going on," says Ryan Archibald, Black Sticks captain.

Many Olympic teams are avoiding the Chinese capital till the last moment.

The United States is flying in its team the day before Friday's opening ceremony and its athletes will wear masks right up till the games begin.

Pollution fears have dogged the build-up to China's biggest international event. About half of Beijing's 3.3 million cars are off the road, $US18 billion has been spent on clean-up measures, and manufacturers around the city have closed down.

The glaring sunlight may also increase ozone levels, a pollutant not measured by the city's official air quality index. At high levels, ozone can affect breathing.

Back to their old ways...

Junket trip for most of participants. Most struggling to pass the qualifying requirements. When was the last time Beatrice won anything? Why could Todd stay retired and give a fresh face a chance, likewise the wind surfer. I just hope they don't ruin the spirit of the haka by performing it at other second. It's meant to be something special and loses it when it's thrashed like at the last games.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

A couple of things
1) beatrice pulled out because she hadn't been performing up to standard lately
2) If todd is the best then why should he step aside?
3) Kendall came top 5 at worlds last year im pretty sure and is a decent chance for a medal

Someone earlier said 10 golds, i think 10 medals would be a realistic target given some of the quality we have over there but 10 golds might be pushing it.

Agree with your comments concerning the individuals and about golds I don't care, how many new NZ records are set I think is what should get the attention. BUT I completely agree with LG when it comes to the multiple badly performed haka, they make me cringe and I've got to change channel until they're over.

I agree the Hakas are shocking but they are a good way of acknowledging a performance, so no matter how much they make us cringe they are about congratulating an athelte on a good performance.

Add a Spain gold into that. Pretty good finish in the cycling.

Good to see a strong showing in the Rowing especially Evers-Swindells and Waddell and Cohen.

the belgium beach volleyball team were fat, which pissed me off when I was drunkingly watching it last night.

I mentioned that fact to my heavy-set neighbour this morning, and she said I was fattist.  I said "no, you're fattest"

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite

hakas surely are a way to issue a challenge and a handshake is a good way to congratulate a performance

the worst was the last commonwealth games when it was coming out for 3rds and all kinds of things, up staging those who had taken gold.

embarrassing.

IMHO Haka's should be restricted to AB Tests and Kiwi Rugby League Tests. They have lost their "Mana" with this overkill.

Still, even I would be impressed, if Mark Todd and his Horse did one together after the show jumping!

You may have done the impossible - and made me want to watch equine sports!

Still, if there's no horse haka, I'd rather watch something else.

Burmester and Docherty will proberly win a medal I would say no way gold. Burmester has Phelps to beat (near impossible) and Docherty has that spanish guy whos undefeated this year. We look promising in rowing after last night at least 6 medal from there im guessing.

Why is everyone crapping on about Mossmeister getting a medal? He'll have to swim about three minutes faster than his PB/NZ record... where does all this stuff come from?

Seems to me he's done well to reach the final (7th qualifier) and only .3 of a second (give or take) outside of his record...

To expect a medal is a pretty big call

apparently Phelps eats 8000-10000 calories a day - so how come Hard News isn't a gold-medal winning swimmer?

Screw the Naenae pool, that's what Karori Park's here for...

And may I say it's been a wonderful day for Croatian teams at the Olympics today, smacked Brazilians in handball, Ruskies in basketball, and to top it all off, Serbs in waterpolo...Yeah farken...

correct me if i'm wrong but he came fourth at the world champs last year so i think most of the talk stems from that

"They lied about the fireworks.
They lied about the girl singer.
They lied about the fans (they are having to bus in "volunteers" to make the stadiums look full).
You can't trust them, now or in the future."

I got the above from an English fella that is married to an asian and now living in London.

I didn't know they were bumping the attendences to "fill" the stadiums. Is there anything that isn't fake about these games other than the NZ equestrians performance??

No doubts at the end the usual Olympic arse kissing will be said about them being the best Olympics ever as they do after each one. You never hear them say that the games were acceptable or adequate do you??

They didn't do it after Athens - but that's fair because the attendance was pretty low.

Also - Rogge said something about not wanting to use Samaranch's line.

Which means Sydney will always be the best Olympics ever...sounds fair to me

If Rogge DOES use Samaranch's line, I won't be happy. And not just out of NSW parochialism.
