Pass the bong Banks I wanna hit!

Beijing, London, Rio.. Auckland?? Sure rugby world cup yes but Olympics NO!

The cost would be too extreme for a nation this size for starters. "China spent about $40 billion on the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and London will pay about $20 billion to host the event in 2012."

Auckland couldn't handle a commonwealth games let alone an Olympics! Especially since Auckland's solution to moving visitors around more quickly seems to be 'build more roads' rather than public transport.

John Banks. He wanks. It won't be anything like a super city if he gets elected.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

It won't be anything like a super city if he doesn't get elected either. Super City, don't get me started

Auckland (or even better, Wellington) should bid for the Youth Olympics. Much more realistic. Or even a Winter Olympics. But a full Summer games? Absolute joke.

Winter Olympics? When it doesn't snow? Think it through please.

Three for me, and two for them.

My bad, didn't state that properly. I meant bid for a Winter Olympics down south. Christchurch or a Greater Otago bid.
Permalink Permalink

Greater Otago perhaps. On that, what is the smallest city to host a Winter Olympics?

Three for me, and two for them.

Probably Lake Placid, currently at 2638

Needs a luge track and after Vancouver even more money will be needed to be spend for safety etc... Might need a hockey rink also unsure of the size of the current one in Dunedin. They have the super pipe down south now right? At the end of the day I really could not see this happening. I read in the same article Banks wants to piggyback Australia's 2022 world cup bid. Haha I am sure they would play games in Darwin before Auckland. What is a realistic sporting event after the rugby world cup we can bring to NZ?

Long track skating as well.  You can run Ice Hockey and short track out of the same venue (possibly) but long track needs more.

Could we pull off a Womens Football World Cup? Some talk of it after the 17s was a pretty massive success and if the game continues to grow and our Womens team continues to get better we would have a pretty strong argument I would have thought?

Especially after the upgrade in stadia for RWC

I reckon Mens U20's first... next step up from 17's and likelihood of getting some rising stars in the sides, then make a play for the full Wimmins.

I would literally cream myself over the Mens U20 coming here.

Auckland couldn't even build a waterfront stadium. I don't see why we should ruin the Olympics.

Has NZF bidded for any age-group WC's in the near future does anybody in the know know?  The U17 women's was a great tournament (still seething that Christchurch didn't get to see the NZ team) but a mens U20's, as was mentioned, would be incredible.  Would be so keen for that.  Btw, who won the U17 womens?  Was it North Korea - I can't remember much, other than the games I went to.

Errr. . . Maybe I am not up to speed about the Olympics idea. But I had the impression from Bank (if I remember rightly) that he said that the Olympic idea was possible if the whole New Zealand was involved rather than just Auckland. That means using the facilities around the whole country and spreading the living arrangements and the sport events around the country. It would be a lot of traveling to see a number of events. But then from tourism point of view, it would be good to see the country but spreading the security details around might be interesting. I think he does meant the opening/closing and the track and field will be in Auckland.

But I suppose it would be an interesting proposal for the International Olympic committee using the whole of a small country instead of a Mega Supercity. It may help future events because the number of sports and the logistics of running the Olympic is board on crazy.

North Korea beat the US, by memory. It was a great tournament, I went to every game at Harbour. I would love to see another age grade cup held here. I don't see why we cannot hold the women's world cup.

They say that there's no such thing as bad publicity. Well there is one exception to every Rule. Every time John Banks opens his mouth he loses votes.

His ego doesn't see this so he continually tries to keep himself in the limelight by making even more inane and idiotic statements.

When Aucklanders voted him in the first time, they learned a lesson and voted Hubbard in. However, they decided they wanted another lesson and voted Banks back in.

Surely Aucklanders are not that stupid that they would vote him in a third time? I mean, come on, just how many times do you have to punish yourself  by voting for him??

I dont mind people being ambitious or having big dreams. Some of our best entrapenures (My bad spelling) have come up with some terrific ideas and delivered them onto the world stage. But Banks is just a dreamer.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Yeah, we Aucklanders sort of roll our eyes and think surely there's somebody better than the 'antagonistic Mr Banks' but no, you have single interest reps or some guy who reckons its okay to buy himself a stereo with ratepayers money, hoping not to get caught, with a Jesus 'I'm being persecuted' complex.
So there's a 'big sigh, I suppose I have to' mentality to this.

There's got to be someone else.

Reading about the Sydney bid, I don't think we have enough money in the country to "bribe" some of the delegates, alledgedly.
