Gwar look ridiculous, dressing up like monsters doesn't take away the fact their music is terrible. Alkaline Trio would be awesome! ..if you guys wanted a better concert though, check out Soundwave in Australia. I went earlier this year when the line up included Alexisonfire, Anti Flag, AFI, Paramore, Taking Back Sunday, Eagles of death metal, Jimmy Eat World, Placebo, Trivium, Faith no more, the almost, jane's addiction and so much more! This time it'll be much more metal influenced but still a kickass line up!

The first announcement for next year (it's in feb.. I think)

IRON MAIDEN
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE* SLAYER
PRIMUS * SLASH *THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS* STONE SOUR *
AVENGED SEVENFOLD * ROB ZOMBIE * SOCIAL DISTORTION
GANG OF FOUR * NEW FOUND GLORY * PENNYWISE * SUM 41
ANBERLIN * THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM * THIRD EYE BLIND
DEVILDRIVER * SEVENDUST * LESS THAN JAKE * THE BRONX
MONSTER MAGNET * TERROR * MXPX * PROTEST THE HERO * MELVINS
36 CRAZYFISTS * ILL NINO * THE ATARIS * THE STARTING LINE * BAYSIDE
THE MAD CADDIES * THE MAINE * TRASH TALK * MAYDAY PARADE

I'll make sure to watch the video at work tomorrow to make up my own mind on Gwar (I'm on dial-up at home). My boss said something along the lines of he likes the concept behind them, but musically they're terrible.

I see the Aussie shows have the Descendents and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, but we don't. Gutted.

Your boss is very wise. GWAR are definitely more of a visual than musical experience.

Agree that having the Descendents here would have been awesome.

New BR LP to be released end of month. Couldn't help but notice that track 10 is a homage to a suburb of the Hutt Valley. Nice.

Really...?

I cannot wait for this album. I know it is uncool to say it, but I love their last few albums. Sure their older stuff is better, but their newer stuff is still a hell of a lot better than anything anyone else is recording nowadays.

Well, no, not likely, but the track is called Avalon!

I think they've regained their mojo a bit too...a desert from 95-2005, but I forgive them, as I don't know of any band that has put together four consecutive LPS (No control; Against the Grain; Generator; and Recipe...think that's the right order)that are just timeless brilliance.

Arf!Edit: I thought you were also refering to living in the HUtt, but now realise you mean to add to the list...you are quite right, Suffer before No Control makes is a quality quintet.

Speaking of aged punk rockers, I had no idea that NoMeansNo were still going (Wrong is one of the best albums of all time imho).

All roads lead to Ausfahrt - any of you keen to review this 2006 release for me, before I actually spend some money on music? HarryHotspur2010-09-21 22:12:01

I agree on the Wrong call.  All Roads to Ausfahrt is a good album but not one you'll listen to much.  No One has more memorable songs.
Fantastic live band(they were in the nineties anyway).

Speaking of aged bands, I'm really starting to look forward to GBH.  Wasn't sure I'd make it but now it looks very likely.

I'm loving the new Bad Religion album. It's very Stranger than Fiction/New America, which might not be my favourite BR albums, but I like this a lot.

I can't share your enthusiasm Fp, largely because I've always thought StF was when BR started losing the plot.

There's a couple of tracks (notably The Resist Stance and Avalon) that I really liked. When it comes down to it BR at rapid tempo is best!

I shall not be changing my Avatar just yet.

Like I said, those weren't my favourite albums. But even the slow tracks do it for me on this album, they might not be very punk, but they are fantastic rock songs. Brett and Greg's song writing is unparalleled, in my opinion.

As far as I'm concerned the worst Bad Religion song (The Hippy Killers anyone?) is better than most bands best song.

Damn Resist Stance is good!

what do you guys think of the Big Day Out lineup this year? I'm thinking of going up for it, never been before but there are a few bands I like this year.

Iggy Pop, Primal Scream, Grinderman. Tool might be interesting.

The Bouncing Souls and Hot Water Music put in a good shift in Wellington last night.

I've never been that interested in Hot Water Music but I really enjoyed their set. Nice to see guitarist Chris Wollard wearing a Leatherface t-shirt too! And The Bouncing Souls are just The Bouncing Souls really - the people's favourites.

Great finale with most members of both bands on stage for a big sing-along of True Believers.

So, No Sleep 'til Auckland was a pretty decent gig.

The venue kind of sucked being basically a hanger at the ASB showgrounds. The sound was terrible until about half-way through when the crowd inside started to build up. The bar was constantly jammed, not enough staff and they actually ran out of beer at one stage! And there was just a little pen outside to wander around, a bit like a prison courtyard. Food options sucked also. But in a strange kind of way it all worked. All the punks and metalheads were cool with each other too, contributing to a good atmosphere.

Here's my ratings for the bands I saw...

Suicide Silence - 3/10. Unintentionally hilarious sludge metal from the States. Cliche after cliche. Judging by the number of t-shirts strangely popular among teenage boys with Justin Bieber-ish haircuts. My career advice to Suicide Silence would be to check their own name for inspiration.

Katatonia - 4/10. More metal cliches from a very nice but serious bunch of boys from Sweden. Apparently they play melodic doom metal but they wouldn't have looked out of place in a Pantene commercial. Not bad musicians though.

Frenzal Romb - 5/10. Definitely more to my taste musically and they are pretty funny guys, but their set just didn't work in this venue.

Alkaline Trio - 4/10. Sigh, I was really looking forward to this but they had the worst sound mix of the whole day. A real shame, I think there was quite a good set lost in there somewhere.

GWAR - 8.5/10. Brilliant. One of the best performances of the day. It was great to see how up for it the crowd were and GWAR really delivered, cramming as much of their low-brow performance art into a 40 minute set as was (in)humanly possible. And finally some decent sound.

Parkway Drive - 5/10. I don't get why these guys are so popular. Sure they are technically pretty good but they really don't seem to be doing anything that hasn't been done before. It said it all that between songs you could hear people chanting for the Dropkick Murphys - to the point where their singer almost had to apologise for playing their last two songs!

Dropkick Murphys - 9/10. Simply on crowd reaction this was the set of the day. The Murphys were just great - 110% energy from start to finish. They are really developing into a genuine celtic folk/rock force in the vein of The Pogues or a turbo-charged Dexys. Everybody was dancing - even the metal-heads.

NOFX - 7.5/10. Just NOFX doing what they do really. Plenty of good tunes and good banter. Like GWAR they understand that a bit of humour goes a long way. Not their tightest ever set but whatever. Linoleum is an absolute dead set classic too!

Megadeth - 8/10. I'm no hardcore Megadeth fan but they were great. A really good, tight, faithful rendition of the Rust In Peace album, exactly as promised. Mustaine is definitely a very, very good guitarist. My only criticism is that it was almost too precise, a little bit too perfect. Maybe a bit more passion and a bit less precision would have been good. Great set though.

Overall, well worth spending 7 hours in a dark hanger on a beautiful Auckland day. Hope it comes back again next year.

That's an eclectic mix alright - funny how a metal band can take you unawares. I remember my first all dayer throwing up the odd surprise (a very early Paradise Lost blowing me away) and being a little underwhelmed because of poor sound quality (the normally dulcet tones of Carcass sounding like a blender).

Great that GWAR are still giving it all after all these years - did you get near enough to be covered in food colouring and assorted goo? I distinctly remember being asked for drugs by a couple of the female slaves (sexecutioner?), but could only mumble the negative as I was reduced to a weak kneed adolescent because of their lack of attire :-P

I love how some reviews for a gig can differ so greatly from others. But I agree with most your calls there, terminator x.

Frenzal Rhomb was probably my biggest let down, as I used to be a massive fan. They haven't been here in ten years so I had high hopes. They are one of those bands with brilliant songs and some absolute shockers. Unfortunately they played too much of the latter.

Dropkick Murphys and NOFX were my highlights. Both bands know how to put on a good show and get right into it. This was in stark contrast to so many of the metal bands which took themselves far too seriously and striking ridiculous poses. I kind of liked Three Inches of Blood though!

Megadeth kind of bored me, to be honest. I'm not a metaller and I don't know their songs, but I was excited to see such a big band. As far as their stage show goes I thought you could just put a CD on, it was lifeless and passionless. Their music didn't stand out anymore than any of the other metal bands there, as far as technical ability goes. That might sound harsh but I had high expectations which were not met.

Gwar were of course awesome. I wouldn't buy their CD though.

Overall a great day, definitely worth the ticket price and it was good to check out bands I usually would not otherwise see. Hopefully becomes a regular event on our shores as the Big Day Out gets less appealing. Next time they should open a second bar and have more food variety.

There's a stack of videos on Youtube already if you search on "No Sleep til Auckland". Some of them are pretty good too. Lovin' all the punks and metalheads with expensive phones!

Yeah, I hate those people when I'm standing behing them, but I love their footage after the gig!

My favourite was this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLhR22eMtFc (actually from one of the Aussie shows)

I've just finished watching The Big 4 DVD and found both Megadeth(and I know most of their songs) and Slayer to be on the boring side stage presence wise.  Anthrax and Metallica are definitely the best 2 stage performers.

LAdies and Gentle punx,

I almost crashed the car today on seeing a flyer for DOA NZ tour. What? THE Canadian DOA? Links to details please.

I'm quite ambivalent about them - their Murder LP is one of the greatest recordings in the annals of the genre. Be there, it would be good to meet some of you YF punx.

Also, it's a chance for them to make up for one of my greatest disappointments when I saw them in Leeds in '92.

Edit - It's amazing how one can become internet savvy when the need arises. Ticket booked for Sat March 5th at Bodega HarryHotspur2011-02-14 19:19:11

I have a poster from last time DOA came through New Zealand.  It was with nomeansno.  I never made it to the show but caught nomeansno the next time they came through.  Still one of the greatest bands I have seen.

Concur with you on NomeansNo. 'Wrong' is one of the best albums of all time and live they were just as awesome. The only caveat comes from a mate who saw them produce a 90minute jazz set, which didn't go down to well with the crowd!

Not long to DOA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4APA8EGgVI

Absolutely loved the DOA show - considerably better than when I last saw them in '93. Asked Joe before the show whether he would be able to slip Concrete Beach in the set, but he candidly admitted that would require the bassist to know what key it was played in! This was probbaly the 5th iteration of the band since the late 80s.

Actually, the new drummer probably wasn't born when DOA started in 1978, but he certainly knew how to pound the skins.   HarryHotspur2011-03-06 15:18:57

You're right. Although according to this story it's just Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible from the original line-up. Wednesday 25 January at the Powerstation.

Don't forget The Business also touring in November.

And Frenzal Rhomb playing a couple of gigs at the end of the month.
