I'm keen to go to the Joey Cape and Tony Sly gig tomorrow night in Melbourne. Sure it is not really punk, it'll be an acoustic show, but they both front punk bands (No Use For a Name and Lagwagon). Anyone keen? PM me.
Edit: I've changed this to be a thread on anything vaguely about punk. Don't get into the "that's not punk bullsh*t", if you think it is punk, post it. I don't give a sh*t! Get in there!

Yeah, I might go to the Auckland show as well. I'll put a review up here of tomorrow's show, if I go.

I like how bands are described as "punk" the first one I'd call a pop band and the second a pop band who have listened to a bit of Metallica I blame Green Day amd Weezer, (who were/are a good band).
I pity you lot that have to go and see the antispetic sh*te that's on offer these days, bands making music that only girls should listen to. FFS.

Buffy mate and your a top bloke you are the most unRELAXed person on this forum.
No it's fine you lot listening to this music I just feel sorry that you have no music that represents your generation and how you feel. People go to gigs these days and stand/sit there watching the band through the cameras on their phones ffs. No one gets involved, there's no edgyness. no tension and no fun.
f*ck I thought I had it bad growing up with the threat of AIDS and Nuclear War but at least my world was a hell of a lot more vibrant than it is today.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8692313.stm is a good example of what I'm talking about.

If you want to see "punks go acoustic" at least make it Chris Bailey & Ed Kuepper from the motherf**king Saints on Sunday night. One of the hardest rocking bands ever (I mean EVER) to emerge from the Antipodes (don't expect that on the night though although I'm sure it will still be cool).

There's always good sh*t happening in Melbourne.
I would actually go to that Joey Cape gig too if I was over there (I like Lagwagon a lot - under-rated band).
Have a great weekend all you lot who are over there.

I knew I would get a "that's not punk" response! f**k it, it's a label, whatever. They're both good musicians, whatever the genre, and their acoustic sh*t is really good. Each to their own!

Maybe I should, gigs were more enjoyable when mostly blokes went to them to get p*ssed up, f**ked up and jump around. These days I go to gigs and see couples watching the band through their cameras holding onto each other like they are watching film Grease or an episode of Friends.
I actually don't think it's because more women go to gigs that the whole live music thing has got so dull. There are loads of factors, but I miss gigs like the Macc Ladds at I think the Astoria, where you had people pissing and vomiting into the audience from the balconies and a mate who'd just got out of prison after a 7 month stretch looking truly terrified at the behaviour of the crowd, people became something subhuman and it was f*cking great. The amount of alcohol, drugs and rock'n roll was f*cking mind boggling.

lol drugs are made differently these days. but even I get annoyed at bloody couples hugging and slow dancing at raves. they spoil the flow of the pulsating masses and if they get in my way they tend to receive elbows as I'm usually thrashing around

Macc Lads? Cartoon band with cartoon fans, imo. Wasn't the music good enough to get the crowd humming?
Getting back to the punx go acoustic..even the great Mr Redmonds has been doing it of late. I'm ambivalent about the whole idea, as unplugged is really not my thing, but I know if the great man came to NZ I'd be one of the first in the queue.

I've vaguely remember them.
Can't argue with Harry re: the Macc Lads, however I think they f*cked up chronically when the skinheads started going to their gigs and that's why the jacked it in the first time and never wanted the rightwing label they got.
One of the band, lives/lived in Porirua for a few years, although I never met him.

This song just came on my playlist. Thought it was a reasonably apt response to your post:
[quote]Don't be alarmed please don't take it personally
But you're acting out on everybody here
You're ability your virility's in doubt
So one more time you clench your fists
Scream and shout
You high-five your friends
Like you're jocks at a football
It seems you don't know when to quit
The crowd stares in silence
As you practice violence
To show you're the king of the pit
What now we're sick of it
So now no one goes
To the front at shows anymore
Because we don't want to be
Kicked in the head
Or punched in the nose
We don't care where you're from
We don't care what set you claim
Why don't you get involved
You don't even know our names
Any scene worth it's salt
Would vilify aggression
It seems that aggression's all you know
So stop throwing your fists
Put out your hand
Participate in the show
Here we go

Strike Anywhere and SNFU playing together: http://www.punkas.com/
Friday, July 23 - King's Arms Tavern, Auckland (w/Kitsch) [R18]
Saturday, July 24 - Bar Bodega, Wellington (w/The Outsiders) [R18]
Tickets are available now from Real Groovy (Auckland and Wellington) or online from Under The Radar for $40 apiece.
SNFU is a band I've heard of, but never heard. What songs do you recommend I listen to?

Better than a stick in the Eye (1988) was the one and only LP I have heard. It was passed on to me at a time when Canadian Punk (NoMeansNo, DOA primarily) was of high interest, and i was still in the fast and furious stage, so SNFU were categorised as an 'ok but light weight' label in my overly black/white view of the world.
Of course, 22 years later, and I think the GooGoo Dolls are brilliant, so a revisit to SNFU might be pleasantly surprising!
If I'm going to shell out $40 what are Strike Anywhere/Outsiders like? HarryHotspur2010-05-31 23:43:14

They toured NZ together in the early nineties. I missed it but caught Nomeansno a year or so later. I'm still not really that familiar with D.O.A .

I've seen SNFU a few times over the years and they are always good. Mr Chi Pig is a great front man.
Footpaul - if you are a fan of Lagwagon and Strike Anywhere then I suggest you check out their mid-nineties output when they were on Epitaph. The One Most Likely to Succeed is my favourite and includes such classics as Eric's Had a Bad Day and Drunk on a Bike. Just do a Youtube search, there's heaps of stuff there from over the years.

Cheers, I'll have a listen now!
Harry, I don't know the Outsiders, but Strike Anywhere is sort of early Rise Against-ish. Songs which reflect their sound (which does change between albums a fair bit) would be Laughter in a Police State, To the World, and I'm your Opposite Number. They are one of those bands that do make consistently good songs, in my opinion. Typical sort of punk politics: socialism, animal rights, human rights etc, singer does a bit of screaming but is not excessive and sings with a distinct passion. A remarkably honest band compared to the plastic bullsh*t that is around nowadays.
And for the record, the Tony Sly/Joey Cape gig was actually one of the best I've seen. (And I've seen Bad Religion, Nofx, Joe Strummer play among others, before you write me off!) Played for four hours, did an hour of requests, played a few metal covers, a great night. A bit like having an acoustic jam with your mates at a party. They were really interactive with the audience too. I think as you get older, the circle pits, vomit and sweat of the moshpit become less relevant to you, although I still like to go mental every now and then (Strike Anywhere and Strung Out gigs coming up!)
