Ok so it has been suggested by my photography teacher that I should do my assignment which is worth 12 NCEA level 2 credits on the Phoenix.
It is meant to be a progression photo shoot type of thing so over a number of weeks I am considering doing photos of things such as:
-At training's
-Fans walking along the concourse before and after the game
-Up close of boots
-Team shots
-Rubbish left after the game
-The stadium empty(before in the daylight and after when its more dusky depending on time of game)
-Lights dimmed (like they do after games when trying to tell us to leave)
-Kits
-Fans at the bb before and after the game. +4kings after.
-Walking out to the field

Just things like that. Feedback would be much appreciated. Along with any ideas anyone has.

BTW I plan on using a lot of you for this.

Cheers.

My photograhy teacher made me make a stupid diorama and take photos for that for my bursary assignment. he told me that sport photography was frowned upon.

but this was 10 years ago.

i am wanting to add more but i have a screaming child on my lap. sounds like a good essay you have planned if presented in the right way (i.e. not a 'getty images' layout)

Looking forward to hearing them. As far as sport photography being frowned upon this isn't the case for me. As long as I have really clear and well taken images with justified ideas relating to me theme that I can talk up then it will be fine. The marking of it will also have a lot to do with having a clear understanding of my theme and how to relate me images etc.
It will be presented as a Folio.
My teacher also said he can get me a pitch pass with the other photographers. I don't want all my images to be about match day though. Pre match and post match are key.
If anyone knows any really good photographers that have done something similar I would appreciate it as I need 3 artist models.

I like the idea.

I wonder whether you could focus it. Do it either on the players and the game, or on the fans. Perhaps make it a diary of a fan. Follow a staunch fan through the ritual of going to a game. The ritual putting on of the Retro Ricki and scarf. The getting together with mates. Heading to the Backbencher. A couple of pints pregame. The pilgrimage to the game across the concourse. Going through the gates. Finding the seats in the Fever Zone. Running through the chants. Shirts off for the boys! The happy walk back into town. A couple of pints at Four Kings.

Just an idea. It's something we've been meaning to do at our paper, but we've never found the time.

Cheers for this Footpaul. I do really like what you've suggested. I am leaning more towards focussing it on a fans POW rather than a players.

It would be fun to do too. It's something my editor as talked about for a while, following a community personality around for a day. I'd love to get around to doing it. It would be time-consuming though because you'd have to follow someone all day. I'd say with this one you could get away with following them from two hours to kick off. Unless you followed me, in which case you'd have to document my eight-hour drive down!

When are you thinking of doing it?

I have 8 weeks to complete it. I will start my in-depth plan over next week as well as some photos of perhaps just fans modeling kits etc. On the 13 Aug when the first home game is played I will properly start taking some more photographs. Realistically it is not a lot of time. I am still trying to find a way to get to some training's as they are during school for me. I have a picture in my head of how it's going to turn out and it's great. Whether it does or not is another thing. I guess we will see.

your photography teacher sounds cooler than mine was! 8 weeks? I forget about this NCEA business.we had to do ours over the entire year and our final product had to reflect a years worth of study and work, hence probably why my art/photography teacher probably thought that sporting photography wasn't a good subject to approach. Others had done something similar with the schools first 15 rugby team and it got slated by the assessors.

Point is that 8 weeks you should get some interesting shots, particularly if you are given a certain amount of access.

The point I was making before was along the lines of making it artistic, rather a bunch of shots of some people going to a football game.

Another thing to think about, level 3. Do you believe that this idea is suitable for level 2 or should you decide to go further with your photography, hold on to this idea for your level 3 assessment. Depending on how excellent your theme and storyboard is of course .

The folio bit I gathered, the Getty Image layout is what I personally call the catelogs you find from Getty images. Lots of images, but mostly not designed to collectively sell a story, just to sell a picture All depends on where you want to go in photography.

Digital or film? Good thing about digital is you can take as many pics as you like. Just keep clicking! I was at the Kopu Bridge yesterday for a story on its progress and you should have seen the photographers from the daily papers. They must've taken hundreds of shots. The Waikato Times only used one. How many photos can you take of a beam being moved into place? I took 102 (I felt like I had to with the Herald and Times photographers going crazy!), and I felt like I was going overboard! But sometimes it is shot number 102 that you use.

Are you not able to get out of you photography class to do it? That is only of course if training is at the same time.

Digital which makes it easier. It does seem like an excessive amount but sometimes you need that many to get that one perfect photograph. I have photography everyday but Tuesday from 9-10. Doesn't fit in with their training's I believe. I will work something out.
Mikecj: you make a good point about saving this until level 3 although at this stage I'm not sure if I will carry on with photography through level 3. I do an extra subject this year which means ill drop one next year which will possibly be photography. This was kind of my fun subject for this year and although I do really enjoy it, it's a lot of work. And it seems that next year I may not have as much time to complete everything to a high standard so it seems a good idea to drop something. The 'fun' subject seems the most logical to drop.

do you have a good zoom lens?  Essential for sports photos...plus tripod (if you want match photos)

Are you gong to be able to get pitchside (if that's what you want to do)?

Zoom lens is average. I don't have a tripod but am thinking of pointing this more towards a fans perspective than focusing on the game.
My teacher tells me he will be able to get me pitchside access. Although this is the teacher that thinks me and Oska are brother and sister.

Monopod rather than tripod. Not essential, but would certainly help. Zoom is definitely a must.

Monopod would be easier to use, especially if you are actually in the stands.

Health Warning: A certain previous photographer attracted quite a lot of, erm, attention from the YF.

I'm sure you'll do great JRT: seeing a story through the photography would grab my attention, but I don't know if that is your remit.

A slightly different take on this could be from the POV of the fan. I mean rather than following a fan and taking shots of him/her on game day, the shots would be what the fan is seeing on the way to, during and then after the game. Have you seen the video of Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up - like that but in stills instead.

The other idea I had could be described as the lifecycle of a football match. This could be time lapse shots of the same section of the stadium (section 21 being the obvious candidate) with the first and last shots both being of the empty seats. So you get the crowd filing in and the seats filling up then follow the emotions of the crowd during the game and finally watching them file out afterwards.
