Photography stores in Napier (??)

My husband and I will be moving from Canada to Napier later in the year.  I do a LOT of photography, and am trying to decide on whether or not to buy a lens or two before we leave Canada.  The problem is that warranties may not cover NZ.  Just wondering if anyone knows if there is a decent camera store in Napier.  If not, would anyone know where the closest one would be?
Any tips would be hugely appreciated!

Looks like the prices are higher, but then the warranty situation wouldn't be a problem.  I'll have to do a bit more research to check out international warranties.

There are two Napier but neither carry much gear in stock. You may be better off buying either before you leave Canada or from somewhere in Auckland or Wellington when you arrive.

Most lenses now offer international warranties so you should be fine there. Camera bodies aren't covered on International Warranties as they have regional variations with power inputs, software etc.

Thanks, ya, I could see on the website that things were out of stock.  I'll check out the international warranties. Looking to get a wide angle lens, and maybe a prime lens. I have a Nikon D90, which I use most often, and recently got a second hand D700, so won't be needing a camera body.
Do you happen to know if the Napier stores would fix a camera if it had problems, or what does one generally do?  I've got a warranty for the camera bodies here, but if they break, I don't think I'll want to fly back!

Plenty of grey market importers online that can do you a good deal. Otherwise hit Wellington Photographic Supplies whenever your in Wellington.

Sounds good. We'll definitely be going to Wellington for a couple of Nix games, so we could always combine that if I can't find what I'm looking for.

Sounds like I'll probably get my wide angle lens before we move though. They seem to be cheaper here.

Grey market (??) New term for me.  How does one know which ones are good importers? Thanks for the tips.

Grey Market are companies that sell directly from Hong Kong, they provide warranties, pay customs, GST, etc. Have local phone numbers for support and are largely above the board. But are not official importers and undermine the whole local economy a bit. They are completely legal and legit companies like Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, etc don't like them, if you have a problem its up to these companies to fix them rather than the manufacturers.

NZ has strong protection for consumers so if the company is NZ registered you can feel safe.

There are plenty of legitimate camera places, I've used:

photowarehouse.co.nz

wps.net.nz

For the grey market places I've used:

smifu.com

photogear.co.nz

You can tell if something is grey market or legit based on cost, stuff sold from hong kong is much cheaper than local.

Interesting re Grey Market!
I guess my question is, where would I go if a camera body/lens that I bought in Canada got broken once we're in NZ? Would I have to ship it all the way back to Canada? The warranties will have expired by the time I get to NZ anyways.  I'm hoping they don't break, but I did have one camera body need work some years back (Nikon D50), so I know it can be a hassel. I was trying to find the info out online, but haven't figured it out.

It probably depends on the individual manufacturer but in general it needs to go through the retailer.

You can get third party international warranties from a company called Mack but I've never used them.

Thanks! Will do.  How do I get in touch with people on here once we've arrived? Do I just post in this forum again?  I'm happy to give my email address, and I'm also over on twitter. I'm in touch with some nix fans on there already.

I'm sure we'll have fun no matter what. We've lived through some "intersting" times with our TFC team, and still enjoyed going to the games. Wonder if we'll get to see Brockie play again. Do the Nix players get traded a lot? We've had more players on TFC than there are stars in the sky, and almost as many coaches!
