Just heard from a fairly decent source that over 50 minutes went by before Pike River bothered to ring Fire Service after the original explosion, during which, amongst other things, workers pay was cancelled and "documents shredded"

Yeh I don't believe in any of histories conspiracies. But my sauce is a lawyer very close to the enquiry.
I just wanted to write this somewhere so that if it comes, I was right. If it never does, then I'm probably wrong and will accept that.

My 2 cents worth on this are that I think the mine did everything within their powers (and their workplace proceedures) to make sure that it was safe to allow anybody else, including emergency services, on to an accident site.
AS for the reported 14 hour delay in contacting people, this could be a number of things like the recipient of the call had their phone off and more likely the mine was taking a cautious approach and making sure they could verify the whereabouts of people who were on site at the time of the accident before notifying others that their loved one was missing feared trapped. A little due dilligence!
