i have to put my british bulldog saxon to sleep today.did not think it would be so hard, been my best friend for over ten years.i am just waiting for the vet to get here and then it is over 10 years of frienship gone.the house will not be the same without him.what do you do after they go, get a replacement and do it all over again or do you not get another pet so you do not have to face the end again.

god i really feel for you
my dog was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia at 11 months that was heartbreaking enough,
he has only just turned 3 and i cant imagine life without him..mad as he is, he is part of the family.

my friend had her 15year old dog put down just over a year ago and it was probably 6-8 weeks later she got a new puppy

hard to say how you will feel or what to do but you will know in a day or so i imagine.

sorry you have to go through what your going through today and theres not much someone can say to you but be kind to yourself....

take care x

My family has had to put down two cats. What we did was, for each of them, had them cremated and put the ashes in a pot plant, sort of like a living memorial.

You can never get a "replacement". Perhaps one day you'll get another pet to take your dogs place, but it can never take away the ten years of happiness and companionship you had with the other. All it can do is hopefully provide another decade more

My condolences mate, losing a pet is never easy.

10 years.  My word.

My rescued Maltese (about 5 years old).  Had him for just 6 months - but what a six months!

Then it's saturday night...come home he's acting a bit "odd".  A few hours later, he's very ill.  Somehow we get through the night.  Straight to the vet at 10:30.  Blood tests and x-rays.  His little body is packing up.  By 5pm he's gone.

Vet said perhaps food poisoning.  But it could have been anything really.  Asked if we wanted an autopsy.  But there was no way we could of handled that.

PS: Absolutely dreading going back home tonight, too..got to pack away all his stuff.

I hate this it's horrible and unfair.  The only thing I can say that he must have been very lucky to have such a fine friend and owner and when you are ready there will be another small doggy who deserves to have such a brilliant protector looking after him or her.

I guess also you have to ask if Saxon would have wanted his life any other way and because you loved him so much I reckon he'd think probably not.

Same goes for you Stevo - sorry didn't notice it was an older thread. But the feelings behind my post are for all of us that have to go through this.

Horrible thing to go through. We had to put our dog down after about 10 years of her living with me. To be honest it was my sisters dog and they give it to my Dad. He hated dogs but grew to love this one. They were in sepretable. My Dad suffers from depression and has not had a job for ages so is in a lot of money. As he described to me this dog was like his best friend. I was upset when we had to put her down I can only imagine what he had to go through.

It also happened very quickly she got sick took her to the docs found out it was cancer, It could be fixed if we had the money but we didn't and still wouldn't even know if she was going to be okay

over two years later and i finally got a new dog, a friend had to move flats and he had a white bulldog he had to get rid of.at first i said no do not want another dog but he kept on asking, i met the dog and took him home for a couple of days to see what he was like, and he fitted in so easily at home that i have had him six or so months now and very glad i did.

We had to put one of our cats down recently. Had him since just after we moved to NZ. Just started getting really thin and not eating over a matter of 2 or 3 weeks and was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in his mouth.  I can sympathise, it hits you a lot harder than you'd think.

Really sad, and it was made even worse by the fact that our 7 year old daughter lost her "best friend' and was absolutely heartbroken.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

When I was 16 we had to put our Dog down, got septicaemia after a hysterectomy. My brother was 13 at the time, and I think we had had the dog 7 or 8 years or so.

That was very traumatic, as especially as Lassie knew something was up and how upset we were, the morning we had to take her to the vet to put her down, she sat on the floor in the hall and refused to leave.

Even my dad, who similar to the post above hated dogs but grew to really care for her, shed a wee tear at the vets whilst the lethal injection was being put in.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!
