Seen one racist attack in Christchurch.

The only racism after that I've ever seen here is just racially insensitive jokes from friends.

Is racism not an issue in Every city in New Zealand? I would be surprised if CHCH is the worst per capita i bet some hick town would be worse.

I say both and they're all good for a laugh.  And I even laugh at my racial background so I don't think it makes me racist.

More anecdotal evidence? First time I ever came to NZ, I was told that Christchurch was the most racist place in the country. Haven't spent enough time there to form an opinion one way or the other.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Having grown up on the outskirts of Christchurch I don't think it's altogether that racist, but then I was in the minority as a white kid oddly enough.

Didn't they have all those fascist groups a little while back? Seem to remember a big ordeal or something. Probably just the New Zealand media reporting something and stretching it out a bit...

having lived in chch the last year, i would say that there are certain aspects that are racist.
i have never seen so many white supremists. there are the areas where asians live and areas where maoris/islanders live, which is away from the majority of the population.
it is very segregated, and you can go quite some time without seeing a brown face.

but like i said before, the thing that i have noticed the most is how many white supremists are around. much more than in wellignton

Christchurch is the only place I've ever been where someone has crossed the road to avoid someone of pacific decent.

It's also the only place where I've been told straight faced by someone that "Maori's are a damned race." In a separate incident someone also told me "All Maori's steal"

The only place I've ever been handed a leaflet from the national front (admittedly I'm sure they do leaflet handouts in other cities)

In comparison to rest of the country it has a noticeable increase in skinheads.

And its not like these incidents are spread over the 15 years I lived there. All would have happened in the last 12 or so months before I left.

Sounds like a wonderful place.

Oh dear. Obviously handing out leaflets isn't illegal so whats wrong with that? Yes, what they preach is racist and disguisting, but what does gaining a leaflet have to do with anything. And have you seen them actually acting out with what they do?

I've lived in 5 different cities. You are the only person I've ever met who crosses the road when they have to walk past someone of Polynesian decent.

What a load of sh*t this thread is, I've lived in/around Christchurch my whole life and it's nothing like what is being portrayed by some (ie Daniel). Yeah there is an element of it, but this is planet earth and it happens everywhere. Yeah there are pockets of certain races in certain parts of the city but I bet this happens everywhere too.

Segregated due to their financial situations.  Just saying 'segregated' like that makes it sound far worse.  Gross generalization but many Maori/Islanders (that I've met at least) come from families who aren't particularly well off and as such they have to live where the housing is cheapest.  That's why many of them live in certain poor places (Aranui etc) and their populations in the richer area's is almost unseen.  Add to that, people often tend to gravitate toward their own if you know what I mean.  It's just like the Asian community in Avonhead and it happens in all cities.

Here here, totally agree. Everywhere has an element of racism and the fact that daniel can't back it up with any proven data is laughable.
