Sad news indeed...

London's Astoria theatre demolished

I practically lived in that place during the nineties.

So many great memories - The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, Green Day, Fishbone, Rocket From The Crypt, Rancid, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones... the list goes on.

Sigh.

...and other non gig adventures including Bjork and Public Enemy.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Snuff and Less than Jake at the Astoria was my last gig before I left for here in 2001.

Bad Religion sometime around '94 probably my favourite at the Astoria. Crying shame, as it was probably a wake up call that Punk Rockers could do 'large' venues and still have a decent atmosphere.

Shame. I was there in 1990 to see River City People. Great little venue.

I was there too. Bad Religion never fail to do a good show.

When I saw Fishbone at the Astoria Chris Dowd threw his trombone into the audience after the first song and it nearly hit me in the head.

I'm intrigued, what's a non-gig adventure involving Bjork and Public Enemy???

Alison and I were walking by the Astoria There's a woman sitting on the step reading a book. Alison says "isn't that Bjork from the Sugarcubes?". We introduce ourselves and Alison and Bjork get into some literary chat.

Pretty much the same thing with Public Enemy. (Minus the literary chat.)

I spent a lot of happy and very drunken nights there.

(that's the Astoria, watching gigs. Not at Frankie's G-A-Y club nights)

So now the Astoria joins the Glasgow Apollo in the long list of great venues who are no longer with us.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Does the Hull Adelphi exist anymore, anyone? Saw Green Day there with an audience of 40...blinding.

Also, at other times Australia's Hard-ons (do they still exist?), Sofa Head (defunct long time ago - but apparantly doing the rock band reform thingy) at various other times.
