A truly sad day for New Zealand. Possibly the greatest kiwi to have ever lived.

RIP Sir Ed

Three for me, and two for them.

Sad news. I see the Black Caps will be wearing black armbands in the test this weekend. Will the Phoenix be doing anything?

...playing football.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

China's news agency reports -
BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhuanet)-- New Zealand's Edmund Hillary, who became the first to conquer Mount Qomolangma to win renown as one of the 20th century's greatest adventurers, has died. He was 88.

So who really was first? Hillary or the Sherpa? I awlays wondered if all the things he did in Nepal were him paying penance for claiming he was first.

Still an amazing achievement amongst many amazing achievements in this man's life. So many good things tinged with some very sad things (His first wife & daughters deaths). He will be rememberd of course and our $5 note will be a constant reminder.

I just hope the media overkill which has already started on TV1 doesn't annoy as much as they had done in the past with others. Time to avoid the news on either channel.

RIP Sir Ed, you achieved things people like myself would have loved to have tried.  Bloody high climb just for a cold Beer though.

... what he got organised in Nepal, after getting up the mountain,  truly was top drawer stuff. Having the thought to do all that was one thing but getting it done quite another.

Perhaps his passing might require a "Sir Edmund Hillary, who are ya?" chant at the 4 kings tonight instead of a minutes silence??

Was just about to suggest something similar. I was thinking a minutes silence at half time but that might be more Fever-esque

to the tune of the "Paulo Di Canio" song -

Keith Quinn at the Tennis on TV1......."TV1 will be keeping you informed throughout the afternoon with updates on the passing of Sir Edmund Hillary"....

WTF, do they think he is going to rise again?? How can you update a mans death?

I see the Hillary family have accepted the Gevernments offer and there will be a state funeral for the great man himself. Fair call I say.

Yet another TV1 update...Spokesman from the BNZ said that the BNZ are sad at Sir Edmunds death and that "he is the only person alive who has his face on a $5 note!" FFS piss poor news reporting.

I have brown eyes too and I can confirm that. Of course I am going to confirm it. But it doesn't mean they're really brown.

Don't get me wrong, the man did an amazing achievement reaching the top. But who really was first? (Conspiracey theries please)
