Roy Halladay  - retired MLB Baseball pitcher in a small plane crash.  He was only 40.  I have fond memories of watching him play for the Blue Jays.

Used to regularly catch the bus from Mairangi Bay to Victoria St and then walk to New market Park to watch football in the early 70's.

That's a name I've heard quite a bit but I'm too young to know about his coaching days with Blockhouse Bay and didn't know much about him.

That was some season for Blockhouse Bay in 1970 under Bert, winning the inaugural National League and the Chatham Cup.

Seems that Bert not only founded a Kiwi football dynasty (two sons and a grand-daughter played for NZ) but he was part of a great football family in Scotland too.

His brother Willie played for Scotland at the 1954 World Cup and managed Scotland at the 1974 World Cup, one of the interesting facts on Bert's Wikipedia page:

Bert outlived his older brother by 33 years (Willie died in his 50's)

His other brother Gabby was a top Scottish player too.

Willie was Scotland manager 1973 - 1977 and managed rivals Herts and Hibs in the late 70's and early 80's before bad health caught up with him and he passed away in 1984.

Outstanding results while in charge of Scotland and reminiscent of the undefeated All Whites at World Cup 2010:

"Ormond steered Scotland to the 1974 World Cup Finals in West Germany. Scotland beat Zaire and drew with Brazil and Yugoslavia to return home as the only unbeaten team in the tournament. They were eliminated after the group stage first round.[4] This was the best ever performance by a Scotland team in a World Cup."

That certainly was a tough group and they were so unlucky not to advance...

According to media reports, Menapi passed away from a heart attack.

He was one of the Pacific Island greats - one of only three Pacific Islanders (along with Fijian strikers Roy Krishna and Esala Masi - who played NSL 1996 - 2004, including winning the 1999 - 2000 title) to have firmly established themselves in Australia's national league. Menapi played three seasons for Sydney United in the old NSL 2000- 2003 (66 games, 19 goals). A couple of other Pacific Islanders (Fa'arodo, Totori) played in the Aussie top flight for a season but without much success.

Menapi stood out in a struggling Sydney United team.  

34 goals in 37 internationals for the Solomons is outstanding in world terms.

Menapi was snatched away from Nelson Suburbs by Alan Hunter at Sydney United in 2000 after he saw him play for the Solomons. 

According to Wikipedia, Menapi was only 40.

Debatable: Scotland performed well but if you only beat Zaire 2-0, you're doomed. Yugoslavia beat Zaire 9-0 from memory, and these were the years when African teams really were naïve amateurs. Very strong Scottish squad too: Bremner, Lorimer, Law, Hay, Jordan, McGrain etc.

As a player, Willie Ormond also part of Hibs "famous five" forward line...

Obviously a very talented family...

I met Terry in Edinburgh when he had traveled over to see NZ play Scotland (1-1 draw) and then later on at the Confederations Cup in France (2003) was a great character and had some great stories, apparently ran 20 marathons in his life and was still refereeing until about 4 years ago when he was 76!  RIP
