Splitting up.

About time really, but i must confess, i am a fan

Some really good tunes, some brilliant (early albums), and they did spawn the college rock movement, or at least presented the global face of it.

Favourite REM songs people? There have been about three best of albums but, predicatably and probably rightly, they are the radio friendly unit shifters. My favourites are a combo of these and the bristlier units- [i stopped listening after Monster]

  • Perfect Circle
  • Cuyahoga
  • Kohoutek
  • Wendell Gee
  • Fall on Me
  • Maps and Legends
  • We Walk
  • Pilgrimage
  • So.Central Rain
  • Good Advices
  • You are the Everything
  • Hairshirt
  • Losing my Religion [have to have it really]
  • Half a World Away
  • Country Feedback
  • Sweetness Follows
  • Bang and Blame
  • Circus Envy
  • New Test Leper
  • E-Bow the Letter
Edit- am listening to GREEN & Hairshirt just came on; so i have to add that
Edit 2: Had to add Fall on Me
Edit 3: Bevan reminded me i had left of New Adventures

all gd choices, and feature on the first 'best of'.
i chose So. Central Rain. would re-consider Driver 8. for my definitive list

I recently purchased a Lester Bangs anthology based solely on the fact that Stipe name checks Bangs in "End of the World"

I saw them at western springs with Grant Lee Buffalo and Crowded House in about 1963.  Was a great concert.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

I am such a big REM fan and I was Gutted to see them split up. They have had their time as they are 50+ years old. I am really disappointed I will never be able an opportunity to have seen them live as I am only 18. I have all of their albums and listened to them many times over.

These are my favourite songs from their albums:

Murmur: I could put almost every song but Radio Free Europe, Sitting Still, Shaking Through and Talk Aout the Passion, We Walk

Reckoning: Harbourcoat, Letter Never Sent, 7 Chinese Brothers

Fables of the Reconstruction: Life and How to Live It, Driver 8

Lifes Rich Paegent: Fall on Me, I Believe, The Flowers of Guatemala, Cuyahoga

Document: The One I love, Its the End of the World As We Know It

Green: World Leader Pretend, Orange Crush, Untitled, Get Up, Pop Song 89

Out of Time: Losing My Religion, Near Wild Heaven, Half a World Away

Automatic for the People: Man on the Moon, Try Not To Breathe, Everybody Hurts, Nightswimming, Find the River

Monster: What's the Frequency Kenneth?, Crush With Eyeliner, Bang and Blame

New Adventures in Hifi: Bittersweet Me, Wake up Bomb, So Fast So Numb, Binky the Doormat, Electrolite

Reveal: Imitation of Life, Beat a Drum

Up: At My Most Beautiful, Falls to Climb

In Time Best Of: The Great Beyond

Around the Sun: Leaving New York, Electron Blue, Wanderlust

Accerlerate: Living Well is the Best Revenge, Supernatural Superserious

Collapse into Now: Mine Smell Like Honey, Everyday is Yours to Win, UBerlin, That Someone is You

New Adventures In Hi-Fi is a great album for a road trip.

That 89 concert looks good.

I saw them play at Hammersmith Odeon in London maybe 10 years ago; was pretty good.

I saw them on that tour too, only shortly after having left NZ. Was in Sydney & The Go Betweens supported, can you remember who supported in Welly?
