Am going to the blues game tonight!

do they call rugby 'footy' over there?
over here, afl is footy, in sydney nrl is footy,
is the rugby in nz nicknamed 'footy'?
yeah people do call it that
They call lots of games footy - but they're not played
predominantly with feet like the real football.
Rugby should really be re-named HANDY because as mentioned
above, not much of the game is actually played with the feet. And
how many times do you hear the commentators quote the phrase "ball
in hand"? It's a game that holds no interest with me - much like
cricket. Yawn.

Rugby isn't close to Rugby League either - if in fact anyone ever
needs a second sport!!

Zephyr way to point out the obvious, most people know theyre

That should be read as meaning rugby league is the better game.

Crusaders fan right here, but I'm trying to boycott this Super 14
season since the NZRU rested half our players for the upcoming

I watched the final last year - best game of the season.

I find super 14 rugby Union boring but, I enhoy watching
international rugby Union, it is wierd.

Same.
Three for me, and two for them.

same here even the npc is losing its appeal. i think its just
better when we not playing teams from the same two countries

Waikato fan.
They never play here (melbourne) the cheap c**ts! unlike the
crusaders, well done crusaders :D.
Bring Waikato to melb's there're alot of Chiefs fans
here!

I went to a rugby game once and it was painful to say the least.
People clapping when a player kicked the ball out. Players sticking
their heads up other players anooses when they scrummed and the
stupid chants of Cann-er-brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry. The only good thing
about rugby here in the Waikato is Possum playing the chainsaw.
That is entertainment.
And for the life of me I've heard commentators say "that was
the try of the year" and all the guy did was intercept the ball and
run 80 metres to score! I'd suggest a few changes of rules, like
you can head the ball and no touchy the ball with hands, stick some
nets up under the posts and the introduction of corner kicks.
Extend the game by 5 minutes a half and sort the substitution rule
out. 15 minutes for halftime and reduction of players to 11 a
side.
Thats a real game!

Rugby League is a lot better, Union... boring.
Each game has its positives and negatives, but it seems Rugby has
fallen out of favour with a lot of sports fans in NZ, many rugby
fans deciding to watch league, more highlights, big hits. I still
like both. I used to be just Rugby guy growing up in CHCH but
seeing little Mo slalom through Argentina's D changed that.
Go Crusaders! Laulala for No13 in AB's not those overhyped overrated Wellington duo.

I am a Hurricanes fan but I think that Nonu is shocking. He does
the occasional decent run, but he can't tackle, has trouble
passing, and loses the ball to much. Conrad Smith was great before
his injury but since coming back has been very average. Neither
really deserves an All Black spot for the World Cup but I think
Nonu will get in.
I just realised I forgot to say that I also prefered Rugby league
over Rugby Union of any kind.
Didn't even watch the Hurries last night - it's got so dull.
I reckon we'll see probably more Hurricanes jerseys at Phoenix
games than Phoenix tops. Mainly because I think to start with at
least the neutral sports supporters will get behind the team.
I find Rugby quite dull. I mean it can sometimes be entertaining
but the scrums annoy the heck out of me, they muck around for so
long achieving precious little, they may as well do a tap and run.
League is so much better than Rugby. I went to a Canterbury vs
Otago game in Christchurch at Jade Stadium i while back and it was
so incredibly boring i have never been to another union game since.

Man - you should see cricket if you think that is dull - it's like rugby but goes on for five days.

I got laughed at at work for not knowing where the Crusaders were
from. I'd never even heard of them, I just ignore the game. And as
for going to a game, I'd rather remove my own pancreas with an
oyster fork.

Cool a man after my own heart....or pancreas.
I just couldn't care less for the game. You'd get more
intelligence interviewing a moose rather than a rugger player.
Maaaaaaaaaaaate.
Dam some of you make me laugh if you think the Phoenix are going to
survive in Wellington without the support of both the rugby and
league public you are kidding yourselves.Guess some of the
interviews i have seen of some footballers over the years means
some of them must have played rugby according to the above
statement as some of them would certainly not be what you would
call intelligent.
GET YOUR SHIRTS OFF FOR THE BOYS

I'm not talking at all about Phoenix here, I'm merely expressing my
opinion on "the ugly game".
I agree with what you say about Phoenix's crowds, they need
the general public ("uh, huh") to get behind them and not just the
already converted.
Doesn't mean I have to cowtow to fans of other sports though.
Oh, and golf and yachting are both crap too.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

I never understand all this disapproval of other sports. I
like most sports and have supported them when I can. Football
comes first followed by League, but I also like basketball,
volleyball, hockey, netball, and can also watch non team sports
such as kayaking.I always appreciate people getting involved and
trying their best in a sporting fashion. OK so rugby is low
on my list............
So lets appreciate everyones interests!

OK, will do, just off to the lake now to watch some kayaking.

I'm not sure its a disapproval of a specific sport. It's just that
rugby doesn't feature in my life. I tried playing it when I was 5
or 6 and in the first game I touched the ball once and in the
second game I didn't touch the ball at all but I did get
a broken toe. It's much like the games of cricket I tried to play.
Stand in the outfield and get nothing but sunburnt. Football
offered a lot more to a kid my size - not swamped by mountainous
kids twice my weight and size - no football was a place
where skill was priority, ahead of brawn.
I did play get forced to play rugger once at Intermediate
School but was asked to piss off when I spent the time on the
field trying to head the ball at every opportunity.
I don't mind league or motorsport but football is number one,
two, three, four and five in my sporting list of priorities. This
Americas Cup thing is another thing I'm not interested in. I just
hate TV1 or the media foisting this expectation that all NZers are
behind the campaign or that 4 million plus kiwis are rooting for
the All Blacks. Perhaps if the news media wasn't so over-bearing of
coverage of rugby my attitude towards it would be a little more
warming.
Hell, if the govenment was going to support the All Whites
next World Cup campaign to the tune of 30-odd million plus then I
may be persuaded to change my mind but all I see is money poorly
spent on a richmans sport that has no bearing on me. That money
would have been better used funding a proper Herceptin programme.
I'm sorry but I'm not one of your typical rugger/cricket lovin'
kiwis. I prefer my sport to be such that it's of global importance,
where you test yourself globally. I won't change my thinking until
say Brazil wins the Rugger World Cup.
Cos the day they do is when rugger has finally won global
acceptance.

Well put young man. Ditto me for almost everything you've said (I do follow baseball closely though).
The problem I have with NZ sport is the coverage given to sports that nobody else in the world gives a flying fcuk about. I mean, you can count the countries that claim r*gby as their national game on one finger.* And netball? Give me a break.
*And before anyone mentions Wales;
1) when Swansea City were in the old first division under
Toshack (late 70s-early80's) they were attracting bigger crowds to
home games than any r*gby clubs were, and...
2) it's a principality, not a country (which is something I
always go back to if my other arguments fall flat).

Just my two cents worth.
Agree with previous posts, rugby is so overrated in NZ
media. Just look at www.stuff.co.nz the so called
Commentary Box features 90% rugby posts. The NZRFU made a
joke out of the only good rugby competition by with drawing the so
called elite players to pamper them and what happened, when
they went back to their teams they played poorly, no NZ teams in
final. I hope South Africa or Australia wins the Rugby world
cup as they didnt try to cheat by pampering players. The best
training is on the park, when the idiot rugby heads learn
that then perhaps the All Blacks will become a winning team instead
of a whinging team of chokers. I went to one super 12 match a
couple of years ago and the ball was in general play for a total of
14 minutes I was so bored. I wont go to another rugby
game.
Go the Phoenix

I enjoy a good game of rugby & often went to Twickers for the
internationals.
Also been to the Cake Tin and Eden Park to watch super 14
& Air NZ cup, but the crowd are like Man Utd supporters - there
is no atmosphere unlike league football in the UK.
Lets hope we can whip up a fever wiv the Nix.
