Rugby violence
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Following on from the French team having bottles thrown at them in Dunedin this new 'horror' has taken place. French rugby player beaten in NZ

Untill we start measuring the violoence in fatalities like some sporting events i wouldnt be to concerned with random acts of stupity. Its not like an organised possy of thugs were out hunting french people.

Maso said that, just before the attackers struck, they yelled "something about 'f...ing French'.

NZ has a big problem with xenophobia/racism.

Just thinking that after the bottles incident maybe the  All Blacks should have to play their next two home games behind closed doors...?

I agree with you but I don't feel that we do enough to address the problem. There's something akin to a sense of denial that within our shores that there are people being attacked purely for the place of origin or accent. It's a little worrying.

I've heard conversation where, when the subject arises, people will say "oh but in France" or "oh but in England". That's never an answer.

I've always known that there's racism in NZ but I'd never seen it manifest itself in a violent form until this morning.  I was walking through town with some friends and a group of Asians were literally being attacked by some whites and polynesians.  They were chucking bottles, which smashed around them, and punching them and everything.  Was such a disgrace.  These Asian people (Korean I think) had done absolutely nothing wrong.  One of the friends I was with is Taiwanese, and some of the things being yelled about Asians just made me embarrassed to be of the same race as some of the abusers.

Interesting , and sad at the same time, in that the incident that loyalgunner mentions didn't make the DomPost today but THREE OTHERS did. Yikes.

A 19-year-old woman was the victim of a "thuggish" attack when she was knocked down and robbed in Cuba St between midnight and 3.20am on Thursday, police say.

Police are seeking witnesses after two teenagers were attacked and robbed in separate incidents in Wellington at the weekend.
