Just as well his future father in law doesnt work for the Army or the games would have to be played in Vanawatu.

Being a Brit so not knowing the full nuances of life in NZ but isn't the term "Coconut" racist? I remember a Tongan friend/colleague got pretty upset when called this at work?

Not 100% really but I thought so. I just asked the wife and she said it was considered a racist term.
When my colleague was called it I literally had been in the country for 5 minutes, new to the job and didn't feel that comfortable with going "so he called you a coconut then? Is that racist?" Guess I've been lucky and not really heard it anymore- we must be doing something right at work

I guess you pick most derogatory stuff at school or as a teenager, so I obviously missed all that here.

Given the person I was referring to, maybe I should call him a "toerag shy"

After all there's a bit of bananarama in us all isn't there?

(What? I'm just saying what you're all thinking.)

To be fair I never got the reference and for some reason can't recall the song. But well done for reminding me that they weren't actually that good looking, apart from maybe the dark haired one.

I think you are funny. Hey isn't it about time for your annual library visit (or is that just reserved for public holidays)?

And I never knew 'pom' was considered derogatory. I've probably offended a fair number of po... Brits then without even knowing it. Figured it was their equivalent of being a 'Kiwi' or 'Aussie'. Apparently not.
And I apologize but it's 'Vanuatu'.

Hi Fortean Times,
(Please take this as a discussion posting rather than further abuse)
Your comments above would be seen by most of us here as a triffle touchy.
Agreeing with Loyalgunner, most of us here refer to the English as poms, from media commentators down, or up, in the case of a couple in the UK..
Even Poms refer to themselves as poms. I have a son in law who is English and he refers to himself and his international teams as poms.
South Africans are referred to as Yarpis and occassionally we are referred to as sheep shaggers, even though only a few on this website have actually indulged.
I dont know how lomg you have been here, but comments like this are second nature, not deroagatory. Southern Hemisphere Humour if you wish.
Yes, calling a Pacific Islander a coconut is more extreme and certainly not used publicly often, but in the case of this guy, politness and diplomacy need not be consdiered. Names like Wogs and Deigos have gradually been consisdered no longer acceptable but I wouldnt envisage Poms, Yanks, Krauts, Islanders, Paddies, Boyo's or even Yids being classed in the same category.

What a list. Ever thought of getting a job with the United Nations?
Anyhow I've known Americans who loathe the term Yank, Irish people who don't like Paddie and when I lived in Wales i.e. Welsh speaking Wales there are pubs I know were I wouldn't have gotten out alive if I'd greeted the lads with "Boyo' - fact.
I can say I don't like' Pom" as I'm English it's about me and I don't like it. I don't "kick off" when I hear the phrase I just don't like it as it has a negative connotation. But that's ok to say it as long as you are having a laugh right?
I'm mightily impressed with your logic also. So it's ok to call "bad" Pacific Islanders "Coconuts" then just not the good ones?
Ok thanks for the education I'll remember that, must try that at work tomorrow...

If you arent out of hospital in time, can I have your season ticket for the last game?

I would have taken that from anyone else Buffy, but you've pretty much got the whole uptight and humourless thing covered rather well sadly.

Well that's your opinion and i'm not sure why you are sad about it, particularly as you don't know me.

Must add that to the list of friendly names I use in my role as The Phoenix United Nations Ambassador.
I'll put it just below Curry Munchers.
Not to forget the Haggis Eaters seeing we have already referred to our friends the Poms, Boyo's and Paddies.
