WTF is going on here?!

Now before anyone has a go, I am as anti-whaling as the next guy. I think it is truly horrid and we should do everything we can to stop the Japs doing it but what is the captain of this ship up to!

He boards the ship (illegaly I presume, basically trespass) and the captain detains him which it would seem to me he has every right to do and then his wife comes out and has a whinge that our government is doing nothing to get him back? Dont board the ship you muppet!

He's trying to get Government attention.

Personally, after watching the three videos of the accident many times I think the Japs were at fault.

Ate sum whale in 2003.  Tasted like an old boot.  Like me sushi though.

Quite frankly he can find his own way back to NZ when they arrive back in Japan.  He boarded the ship illegally which amounts to piracy.

He could be nailed by Japanese authorities though.

Yes but the only reason Japs are down here is because they over fished there own stocks. Not so much or a problem with them doing it in there own waters tbh.Michael2010-02-16 20:37:27

Sea Sheppard are pirates and the Australian and New Zealand governments should distance themselves from them as far as possible. I don't know enough to have an opinion on the whaling but piracy is a serious crime and some of the crap both sides get up to down there is hugely dangerous.

The Americans & French blast Somali pirates out of the water when they try to board ships.

^^This (EG's comment).

I have no sympathy for this clown.  Good on the Japs, throw him in prison or do whatever tends to be done with pirates (stopped hangings a few years back I believe).

Personally I'm more for whaling than I am against it.  NZer's, by and large, have jumped on the anti-whaling boat (terrible, albeit weak, pun) like they did the anti-nuclear one and I think it's a disgrace that very few of these people actually think for themselves.

I mean, the Japs and some Northern European countries are going to continue whaling so why not legalize it (with some strict conditions, ofcourse) and then it could become more transparent.

The one thing that the Japanese don't lack is balls.  They don't f**k around (i.e., Pearl).  Charming ladies too.

Whales can f**k off as far as I am concerned - big, pointless c**ts floating round all the time offering nothing to society.

Hippies are the same as well.

Both of them can just f**k off.  And don't get me started on Pandas.

PS Do not confuse Whales with Wales - Wales rocks and Welsh people deserves to be treated like royalty everywhere they go.

I don't about you but if someone rammed and sank my boat i'd be pretty pissed off to and i'd be looking for compensation, he's hardly a pirate he's not attempted to take control of the ship or rob the crew, he's a person whose boat was sunk intentionally. similar to someone doing a runner after crashing their car into yours writing it off you'd be looking to get hold of them as well

but think of the law! the INVIOLATE LAW THAT MUST BE OBEYED AND TRUMPS ALL ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

I don't care much about this case either way, but the way some of you are condemning it makes you sound like grumpy old talkback callers

There are better ways to go about it though. Even if he wasn't intending to take control of the ship, sneaking on to it and into the wheelhouse could be seen as an agressive act; in fact trying to take control of a whaling vessel just seems like the next logical step from what SS has gotten up to in the past.

There is if you believe strongly about something you consider an injustice. Let's see - the Civil Rights movement would never happened if some people hadn't carried out illegal acts of protest. Cosimo2010-02-17 16:40:41

I'm kind of reeling frm reading back through this thread and can't believe I now have the image of pandas and stiffy's or their lack there of stuck in my head

But back to whaling. I'm the first to admit I'm a hypocrite... I eat meat but have pets and love them to bits and know there is no diff frm my rabbits and cats to a lamb or cow. Many japanese are horrified we eat cute lambs that they see frolicking around. But there again Japan is a very fast evolving country and the latest two generations are vastly different frm their previous and there has been reports that they wdn't even consider eating whale meat. The meat sold after supposed scientific tests have used some portions has apparently been hard to shift.

And I understand why any country wd be annoyed at another country telling them what to do. But whales have intelligence and feel pain and emotion and the way they is killed is particularly inhumane.

Personally I wish I didn't like the taste of meat and had the courage of my convictions but I fully admit I have no problems with activists who disrupt inhumane torture - wether on a whaling ship or vivisection lab

I nursed my mum dying of cancer in 2008 and we discussed the fact I don't even support daffidol day as the cancer society admits they use some funds raised on animal research and I believe as do thousands of scientists that there are better ways to further medical technology today.

I hate rent a protestors and hippies but I believe in standing up for things that particularly annoy you so I support Sea Shepherd and frm the video I saw on the sydney morning hearld site (before it quickly got yanked off) the japanese deliberatley rammed the boat

The only qualms with whaling I have is the methods used and when it's done on endangered species.  Otherwise I care as much about a whale as I do a cow - and I'm not a vegetarian or anything so that isn't a massive lot.

And, as I said earlier, I resent how these greenies are making our country look.

Not wishing to get drawn into this but the "greenie" look as you call it helps bring in millions of tourist and also export dollars into the country. Lose this image and you lose a lot of dosh.

Apart from the landscape being clean and unspoiled NZ has very little to sell it. If you stop being seen as an environmentally sound place people will stop coming. So I say get back to supporting the anti-whalers.

Well tourists are f**king stupid if they think a country that isn't anti-whaling isn't going to be clean and '100% pure'.

whaling has nothing to do with clean, green image/marketing brand.

Greenpeace and others like them do not let facts get in the way of their tunnel-visioned crusade.

The proposal that the govt may back seems to be a good step towards a compromise and a diplomatic solution. People who only see things in black and white have difficulty with this. I don't.

You don't have to have brains to spend cash, there are thousands of hippie Svens, Helmuts and Helgas who come over because they think NZ is some panda-cuddling, whale-massaging paradise.

Lose that image and the tourism industry is f*cked. What else is there? A vibrant music scene? A kiwi Las Vagas? Decent shops? Decent food in the form of meat and Veg? Oh sorry you can role around in a giant ball like a friggin hamster, sorted, book me a flight.
