Seeking funding for global youth leadership summit in October

Hello fellow feverites!

I have been invited to a global youth leadership summit in Dublin this October.  It's called One Young World and it brings together young leaders from around the world for a week.

I need to raise sponsorship for the conference as there is a fairly substantial cost involved. I am wondering whether anybody has any tips, suggestions or ideas for fundraising. Ideally I'd love to raise funds through a mixture of fundraising events that friends and family could get involved with, and through applying for grants etc. Of course if you'd like to sponsor me yourself that would be much appreciated as well! (I'll be setting up a pledgeme in the next couple of days).

I'm aware that this is a bit of a random place to ask for advice but I'm spreading the net as widely as possible at this point so any suggestions you might have would be much appreciated. If you'd like to find out more about One Young World the website www.oneyoungworld.com and my candidate profile is here - http://www.oneyoungworld.com/our-network/candidates-and-delegates/community/Candidate/212601. *shudders as internet anonimity is shattered*

Many thanks!

Grants are a tough gig.

Quiz nights are a remarkably effective fundraising activity. Find a friendly pub, ask them to chip in a free drink per head and some nibbles if you fill the place up on a Sunday (or any day except Friday/Saturday) night.

Then charge $20 a head. Bank a couple of grand just on entry if you have 10 friends who have 10 friends, plus some bonus money for selling answers etc. Costs are nil if you can get donated prizes.

Otherwise you could scratch around for an entity prepared to back you that has access to gaming machine grants. Those are pretty yuck morally speaking but hey, it's easy money.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Cheers Smithy, appreciate the advice. The pub quiz idea is a good one, I'll get on to that. Will keep this thread up to date with any details if anyone is interested in coming along.

Agree that pokies grants are a bit sketchy and don't think I want to go down that road at this point.

Any other suggestions from anyone more than welcome!

Take a look at Big Pete's latest post (#1628) on ASB Prem/Canterbury Utd thread. Might give you ideas.

Have you checked the Ministry of Youth Development fund? (knowing where you work I'm guessing yes?)

They can provide specialist grants/ fudning for adventures such as this!

Have had a brief look but will investigate further now that you've reminded me. Cheers, perhaps the end of my fever forum anonymity isn't such a bad thing after all ay! Haha.

Genius plan. Maybe that dodgy WGA chap who kept telling Terry that the cheque's in the mail could help out.

I don't think that'd be a terribly successful strategy to be honest. Appreciate the input though lol.

Have started a givealittle account as I reckon this could be the better way to go. Link is here for anyone interested -  https://www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/oneyoungworld2014.

Set yourself up as a football agent and get others to pay you monster percentages -

Hell no.

If you don't have the card and the personalised welcome letter from Feverish (name crossed out and Smithy written over it in crayon), you're not really fever.

Bloody exec get a fridge magnet so I'm told.

I didn't know this either lol. Smithy are you saying that if I was a paid up member I'd be eligible for the #yfspendup cash?!

Please don't let me interrupt the #yfspendup yarn, but thought I'd let y'all know that my givealittle fundraising page has now been validated as a legitimate cause as opposed to a Sery Elie de Campos-type scam. Isn't that good news!

If you'd like to chip in the page is http://www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/oneyoungworld2014. Any donation big or small would be much appreciated!

Great that you got accepted and I've just skim read it but it sounds somewhat elitist. Never thought putting young folk above other young folk helpful so why should I and the missus put some money in?

Appreciate your comments FT and would be keen to hear more about why you think that.

I found the application process quite inclusive to be honest. With some of these types of things (particularly anything UN-based) my impression is that you need to prove yourself or meet a certain standard to get accepted, but with this one it didn't feel like that quite so much. The questions in the applicaiton were very much motivation-based (i.e. why you think you should attend and why you're passionate about the things you're passionate about, and how you think that can make an impact) rather than asking you to list your achievements, grades, past involvement in similar initiatives etc. The motto for the summit is "Where young leaders start leading" and my impression is that what they're really looking for is people with enthusiasm and passion and commitment, rather than a track record of achievements necessarily. That really resonated with me because I'm really passionate about this kind of stuff, but never had the top grades and school or uni. They weren't bad, but they were never amazing, so I was stoked to find something which values those more qualitative things in applicants.

Not sure if that addresses what you were getting at but will stop for now before this post gets in to tl;dr territory. But keen to hear more from you if you've got any comments, would appreciate your feedback.

Hi,

Have you look at the Royal Society of New Zealand? Not 100% sure if its the right area, but I used to work there and they offer scholarships and funds to students for travel overseas. You can find more here and maybe one of them is right for you to apply http://www.royalsociety.org.nz/programmes/funds/international/

Other people to try is Freemasons as they quite often have grants.

Best of luck with your fund raising, I'll put some money into your give a little but don't have lots myself at the moment.

Thanks very much for the suggestion, that's really helpful and I'll follow that up.

No worries whatsoever about the givealittle donation. One thing I don't want to do is pressure anyone in to giving, firstly because I know a lot of people don't have a lot to spare, and secondly because I know a lot of people are already supporting a lot of other really great causes. I don't want to detract from those in any way or suggest that my cause is more valuable than others. If people want to donate themselves that is great and really apprecaited, but for others who maybe aren't in a position to I really just appreciate them suggesting ideas, spreading the word and supporting me generally. That's really valuable as well so as mentioned, thanks very much for your suggestions above.

Does anyone know of pubs in Wellington which allow people to host their weekly quiz as a fundraising event? I know Spring and Fern do and I have contacted them about hosting their quiz, but looking for other options as well. Basically trying to extend the fundraising net beyond friends and family, so being able to host a fundraiser with a regular crowd in attendance already would be really helpful.

I have been to a couple at 4 kings where they were fundraising, could buy answers etc (not a fan). Think it opens again next month, so you could contact them and do it after they open, or host it at the pub on the terrace if you can't wait that long.

Have you not just got a paypal thingy where we can just give you money?

Also timeframes again?

Thanks FT really appreciate it! If you click the Givealittle link in my signature you can donate directly that way (kinda like paypal except with no fees).
The summit itself is in October.
