The old Lincoln pie shop (now Hillyers cafe) and the old Molesworth Bakery.  Best pies ever.

My folks had friends who ran the local hotel and every other Sunday we would go and have Sunday lunch there. The wife did all the cooking and would make the most amazing steak and kidney pies known to man. I have tried many, many times to recreate the biscuit pie crust but just can't do it. Sadly she died of cancer fairly young in the early 80's - a beautiful, elegant women. She dressed like Margot from the Good Life but looked more like Jenny Agutter.

The dish was very simple S&K pie, chips and peas but it was so delicate. It was the sort of dish Rick Stein champions these days.

FT - how do NZ pies compare with UK ones?

I read somewhere that NZ ranks up there with consumption of pies per capita (draw me correct bar graph Arsenal why don't you).  I think we out do Oz in this respect.  And of course we have a keenly contested national competition.

Is it something that like many English creations, has been imposed on the colonialists and improved (e.g. cricket, rugby, fish and chips)?
