Love them both but Melbourne edges it for me.
That whole 'Melbourne=Welli, Sydney=Auckland' thing is so rubbish btw.

Been to Sydney once and didn't like it at all. Only good thing is proximity to Queensland.
So having never been to Melbourne or even Victoria I pick Melbourne.

Melbourne = Welly is close.
But people who say Sydney = Auckland. Have probably never been to either of the places.

Melbourne, beacuse it's easily the best city in Aus/NZ.

Erm, no it's not - for starters Melbourne is about 10 times bigger, has a nicer climate and beaches, and fit-looking women.

Im meaning more Artsy fartsy. Cafe Culture like.

Sydney is very artsy fartsy, and their coffee has improved out of sight. It's a beautiful town (parts of it).

I've been to Melbourne twice and Sydney six times. Both have great shopping areas (Chapel & Greville St, Newton) tho not the ones most people can name, both have great theatre, concerts etc. Both are easy to get around. But Melb is a little more poncy - kind of have to dress up a bit more to go shopping or out at night. And I'm a girl all about waves so Sydney easily wins it for me

Can't wait to tell the SDC boys that they're 'poncy'. Will be delicious!

And I don't think either city is like Wgtn apart frm having lots to do. One of the greatest things about Welly is that its one of just a few cities around the world where the nightlife is centralized. In Akld, Melb, Syd you kind of have to decide where do i want to go tonight? the viaduct, ponsonby, k rd??? With Welly you can just choose to go to town then you have hundreds of diff venues to choose frm - its part of why bars & cafes round town get a more diverse mix of people as in other larger cities people tend to stick to their fave suburbs

Sydney is pretty good right now. Never been to Melbourne.

I lived in Sydney for 3 years, but with work I travelled to Melbourne extensively.
Differences seem to be that, IMHO, all Melbournes entertainment seems to centred round te city centre, whereas Sydney is more about the character of each suburb (I'm a big fan of Newtown (esp the Town Hall Hotel), lived in Petersham about 10 mins away for 2 years).
I think perhaps StealthKiwis experience of Melbourne being more poncy, is because everyone has to go to the city centre for the night, so you have all the ponces and bogans in the same place at the same time.
Wheras in Sydney, you'll not find many ponces in Newtown, but if you were to go to the Eastern Suburbs (Neutal Bay etc) or North Shore, you find more ponces than you could shake a gucci handbag at.
Melbourne's small bars and venues are famous, and many can be found along and off Little Bourke, Little Collins et al. Sydney have recently passed licensing legislation to encourage similar types of venues in CBD, it seems to be taking off quite well (there was an article about some of these new small venues in the other weeks SMH).
When it comes to venues for watching sport, Sydney has Cheers on George St, which at times can look like the Cantina from Star Wars, but with Four Kings-esque wall to wall TVs downstairs showing sports from all over, it is always packed on a Sat night with people getting their EPL and SPL fix (my memories would be one half of the room watching the EPL games on one side, and the other half wathcing the SPL on the other, and anybody else playing pool in the middle).
Melbourne has the Charles Dickens on Collins St, a basement homage to the lounge bars of ye olde England. Wood pannelled bar, carpeted floor, and a eclectic mix of UK and imported beers, perfect for watching the football on the tellys hanging from the wall.

It's not a proper Melbourne bar unless it's down a laneway and there's no sign above the door.

my experiences of going out in Melbourne was more going to areas like Fitzroy or St Kildas - didnt really experience much of the inner city night life tho quite like the seagull roasters at the casino and the restaurants there seem to be open quite late. Sydney has the wharf area which is much like the Akld's viaduct but prob bigger and evn more expensive but again it has large areas of bars, cafes etc out in the suburbs

Melbourne, I voted randomly though, I've never been to Oz LOL!

Bugger, I voted Melb as I thought it was related to the GF.
Never been to Melb, but I'd have to rate Sydney. Given I've spent 22 years growing up in Wellington, now living in Auckland. Sydney is just like Auckland should be +20 years with John Banks 6 feet under in a swine farm where he belongs. Sydney is also a beautiful city and full of character, something Auckland is lacking. Although Parramatta in my eyes is a sh*thole, Auckland has it's fair share of rubbish suburbs also.
Cabbies in Auckland are w*nkers, but I didn't get that impression from the cabbies in Syd. Had to catch a cab each day to/fro Rydalmere for two weeks. Suppose with great public transport, the NSW cabbies have to be particular in their service whereas Auckland PT is a f**king joke.
Brisbane in my eyes is just another Christchurch. Boring city, no character. Fortunately for Brissie, that not too far down the road there's GC to make up for it.
