wow, just stepped over the line. mate the vikings were a great team. they had players like jarrod cunningham, cullen, stephen bachop, dion waller, chresten davis, phil coffin, bull allen, roger randle to name but a few. how many second division sides in the last 10 years had players that made the all blacks or even hurricanes? if it weren't for the admin side of things they would be a force in the top division now. lost the final in their first season to a good northland side. second season they were undefeated and won every single game with a bonus point, and if the semi and final had bonus points they would've got them there too. 4+ tries every game all season.

Remember this you muppet NZ has NEVER won a true world cup in rugby. The only one they could manage had there best opposition excluded. As for the next WC just watch the rules get changed so players outside NZ can be picked.

what so every person who has won a gold meda at the olympics when other countries boycotted have never won a "true gold medal". pull your head in mate. when NZ are rated world number 1 at any time in football then it may rival rugby for popularity in NZ. but still probably not. until then just handle it that rugby is our number 1 sport and football is miles away.

By what measure ?

Do you believe that if the media in this country gave cover to domestic football in a way that was representative of competitor numbers, or genuine interest, do you think it would still be ?

With immigration patterns and the choice out there, there is now a significant proportion of the New Zealand public that don't care about sport, then there is another portion that have got tired of the likes of Jim Kayes and his mates with 'poofball' stereotypes, all before you look at the competitor numbers and the people who would just rather watch football.

I've always enjoyed Union, but the more I hear and see of the media manipulation and the ignorance of some of those people the further I get from ever returning to a game of Union.  I still like the game, but the administrators and much of the media keep away from it.

The days where New Zealand is all about Rugby are gone, it's just the NZRFU and the media that pay them obscene amounts them for a substandard product that have yet to realise it.  As Rugby grows in football markets around the world the Ostrich's have yet to click that the reverse is happening here.

What did the Vikings ever win in the 1st Division to deserve the title of 'great team'?

Three for me, and two for them.

it's a trickle more than a flood though isnt it. a team like the manawatu turbos can get crowds to rival the phoenix, so i just cant see where the "rugby is dying" people are coming from. sure the popularity of rugby isnt what it once was, but it wont be for a long time that football overtakes rugby.

interest in football? what interest? we have ONE professional team here and all of a sudden nobody likes rugby? the phoenix struggle to get 10 thousand to a game and they're the only pro team with a half decent product to watch.

i support the phoenix and go to most games, but get sick of hearing all this drivel from football that it is overtaking rugby. won't happen in our lifetime fellas.

Think we won the womens didn't we? That got more coverage than the football. errr...not.

Heck...Utts is a legend. Great keeper. And we drew with China- not bad on comparative populations, though we should have won. The Admiral is back for the world cup. Takes a 4 year cycle, not much in between.

Soon the rugby chaps are going to wake up to the fact that we might be the Brazil of Rugby, but that doesn't mean they rule the game.

peace out

no, they won't wake up to this "fact". who is saying we rule the game? we're consistenly the best team in the world, albeit without winning world cups. mate our rugby team beats countries with way bigger populations on a regular basis. yes we actually beat them, not just rubbish teams from the pacific islands. NZ are rubbish at football and we will be for a long time. narrow minded idiots wake up to that would you instead of spouting off all this crap about football taking over the country. not going to happen.

Yes, but for every Manawatu there are 3,500 at Canterbury vs Auckland and that is the competitions 'banner' match, they can't even pay people to attend. Christchuch got 6,500 to see the Phoenix jog around against a Mainland side that no one could name a single player from. There is a 250 for Counties at Ericsson or 1500 (yeah right) at North Harbour Stadium.

As for interest, almost any street in urban NZ will have more football strips on it than Rugby merchandise, has been the case for the best part of 15 years but any chance the media would represent that ?

As I say, used to be a big fan of the game, but it's become the excuse for a pack of narrow-minded and ill-informed administrative and media twats to beat up and stomp all over everyone in this country for too long.

Rod,

Let's take a step back.  This thread was a VERY lame troll from tlc, what did he expect as a response ?  I admire you for fighting the good fight, but to some extent you are arguing points that were never made.

Don't do yourself a disservice by trying to justify quite frankly average quality trolling, and don't let people troll you in return for tlc's ignorance.

How's my driving? - Whine here

ahh so many flaws in that reasoning. rugby fans have been oversaturated with games, which is an admin error. but do you honestly believe that if chch had as many good quality games of football as they do in rugby they'd still get 6,500 for that phoenix kickaround? ok mate believe what you like but we will see. ill admit im wrong when football is the most popular sport.

point taken HN.

I wonder with NZ's small population base and limited funding compared to other Rugby playing nations (and developing rugby nations) will NZ stay the dominant force in Rugby? If Rugby was really to grow to become a world game I think it may be hard for NZ to keep its dominance it has had. I think that may happen in my lifetime, and if it does the balance of power in the media and sponsorship $ could shift, with football, I think, benefiting; though Rugby will still be the big brother of sports in NZ.

The "there are more football shirts on the street than rugby shirts" argument is not at all relevant or representative if you think about the economics. Football is a middle class game played mostly by white people with a large european expat influence. Thats why there are so many shirts on the street. Rugby is a different demographic, only have to compare a lions crowd to a nix crowd to see that.

nonesense there's fiji football tournaments, indian football tournaments  etc played throughout N.Z,we even play against teams made up of certain ethnic genders in capital football they too wear tops from english football sides as well as others. so this whole whites only play football is in my view is nonesense, it's more that we get more coverage of english football than other leagues through the media, even in third world countries they play football amongst themselves and still you see them wearing man utd, arsenal tops etc etc

rugby wil never be the number 2 sport fair enough, but theres no harm giving it a run for it's money.
The lions have the same promtion as last home game, all adults can bring as many kids too the games as they like for free, three or four years ago that would be unheard of, somethings changing

that may be the case in the major centres but i think if you go to provincial NZ it is very much a white middle class game. As far as the shirts go i also think it helps that through most of asia and even in some places in NZ you can get very cheap rip offs.

And the lions are meeting the threat and doing well out of it. Football and the Nix have to keep upping there game as well as the WRFU have.
