The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!
With all the users on here with various experience and qualifications etc. I thought it would be cool if we had a thread dedicated to helping each other with various computer problems, hardware and software issues etc.
For example my friend has an issue with his machine whereby he got nailed wityh an online malware called Virus Remover 2009 . exe and it in turn gave him a nice trojan. It appears the only way to nail it without a lot of fluffing around is the old Format C. Anyone know of an easier way?

Try getting them to go to folder options and viewing hidden files, unhiding known extensions and unhide protected system files. then do a simple windows search for that virus file. If you can see it then you have several options. If not it could be a bit harderfrustr8dstriker2009-04-05 21:26:05

Not enough of them can spell for there to be a Greek thread. And nothing greek is official

I know it's a lost cause but I was hopeful that it might be taken seriously for once with good intentions to help each other. Then Frankie started the downfalll

Common Sense for prevention of Virus's:
Have a working Firewall
Have working SpyWare
Have a working anti-virus software
Scan your computer once a week.
I have these and I can proudly say I have never had a virus. And this probably isnt much help since this is AFTER the infection but.. meh

Apply windows updates - go to your control panel, turn Automatic Updates on.
Backup!
At least once a month, maybe even every day.
Just work out what you wouldn't want to lose.
Need to copy it to somewhere external to your computer; e.g. CD-Rom.
There is a backup program in Windows under System Tools.
Free Anti-virus for PCs:

Free anti-spyware:

There's a free firewall in Windows XP; you can download an even better one from
http://www.zonealarm.com
Run the scans once a week. Some of them can be scheduled automatically.
And use Firefox or Safari browsers.

Though if you do run AVG run something along the lines of Spybot and AdAware at the same time.
If you are seriously concerned about viruses and are willing to spend some dosh. Nod32 has reportedly never been beaten by any virus. A tad pricey though.
Flick me a PM and I could take a look at your mates drive over the uni term break and see what can be done if you want.
