I'm watching it with some mates. Making it a regular Monday thing. I think we're going to MySky it, not watch it live, and then fast forward through them...WIN!

Picked the entire series up from the warehouse last week for $26.

Dunno if they've fixed their price yet though.

Bought the book the other day, written by Stephen Ambrose son (Ambrose wrote BoB). Excellent so far. Will certainly be entering my DVD collection soon, BoB takes pride of place alongside the West Wing

Heard it's sh*te. Hanks place pretty fast and loose with some aspects of the book, apparently.

I thought it was pretty good. My brother bought me the book for my birthday and I plan on reading it along with the tv series.

What everyone else think of it?

Not too bad.  Didn't take long before they got onto Guadalcanal.  Thought they might show them training in Paekakariki before being shipped off.  They could've showed a movie length pilot.

That was brilliant.

yea that was f**king mean, though thought there would have been more lead up and character building like BoB but all good

Bollocks.

Yeah it was ok but I also thought they might have a bit more background story and training. I'll watch it again.

Yeah, not enough character building for me. War programs have to find a balance for me between characters and events, BoB was great at it and thats why it was such a success. Not sure it did that for me.

The book does tell the back story of all involved however. Conincedentally I was up to page 100 when I went to bed last night and it was aligned with what I had just seen. Battle of Hells Point was the bodies on the beaches for those interested.

I was thinking about that but they would be directly copying BoB

Historically, Guadalcanal started quitely, the Marines landed on the beach almost unopposed.  Once inland & after over-running Henderson Field the Japs really pounded them wave after wave.

West wing. Palmy library had the entire DVD series. My wife and I watched all the seasons in about 6 weeks.

edit: Pacific was good to, but as others said, it did lack some character building.aitkenmike2010-04-17 10:59:12

Must say I'm rather underwhelmed by this.

Band of Brothers is better from both action and "personal storyline".

my friend has a theory that TVNZ is chopping the episodes. Reckoned the first episode was only 43 minutes of programme which seems shorter than previous series lengths...this one seemed a bit short too.

I'm not sure, but suspicious.

Band of Brothers was always going to be a difficult act to follow. damn amazing series.

I'm enjoying it, up to ep6 now.
Though I'm not comparing it to BoB which may help.
I had the strange idea that "Winters" of BoB was going to show up, mainly because that series finished with him heading off to the Pacific.
Silly me.

I think there was a lot less CGI in BoB?

Prime cuts Top Gear. Downloading it makes for a far more complete episode. Wouldn't be surprised if TVNZ was, they seem to be milking the ads.

Prime doesn't cut Top Gear, they just show the international version which is different to the British version due to different contractual arrangements.

Possible that same happens with The Pacific, but don't know it for a fact.

English version of the Pacific = The channel?

Euro version = Atlantic or Mediteranean?

Argentinian version; Guadalcanal = Las Malvinas

Kind of seems to me like TV One forgot to show the whole first episode.

Last night was better, still not wonderful though.

One can't help but compare it against BoB.  The story telling in BoB was definitely better.  Some of the episodes had one of the characters telling the story in occasional voice-overs.  I read that the colour in the film/video in BoB was deliberately "faded" to give it the feel of the period.  Last night's Pacific had action but it left me sort of ho hum. Absolutely criminal if they are cutting it.

If they are it's a capital crime. My second in that category alongside shell fish bed stripping.

They should have been smart and got several good sponsors for the season and had no ads.

They are too stupid to think up something good like that. But if they are cutting it....I was always going to watch it on DVD first, but had to watch the first episode cos was at a place where everyone was and now can't wait.

really unbelievable if they are cutting it. Why would they be that silly?

haven't emailed them and haven't found any program lengths from overseas....

anyone got any evidence...any yanks watched it?

Best episode yet last night (2nd to last), but still falls short of BoB.

They advertised another mini-series from the same producers set in Iraq.

By the way Stevo, cute girls in your signature

I think the last 3-4 episodes have been pretty intense with some of the battle scenes. Been a change in Sledge and next week should be good to see what happened to him after the war.

Generation Kill was the mini series advertised. Has been out on dvd for quite a while but looks good.

Yeah, has got much better over the last couple of weeks. The scene last night where he fell into the fox-hole with the maggot covered body was horrific. By spending enough time with Sledge and Basilone in the last  weeks they have allowed some characters to develop which has been good.
