The Yellow fever Run for the Hills/Survivalist thread

As I reckon, Powercuts, Tsunamis, Zombie-Apocalypse, End of days, pissed off Godzilla are just going to get more common, I've started a dedicated thread to share our knowledge on how to survive.

We had the power off today. We were much more organized than last time. Worried though that bits of the emergency kit are starting to travel towards the inside of the house in light of these powercuts rather than in the easily accessible shed.

I have a weird collection of torches which was good and was very pleased and offered a small prayer to the late Trevor Bayliss for the wind-up radio.

Things I learn't today?

Keep everything recharged. My phone was out of juice and Vicks old Islab was nearly dead too.

Need to get the gas-cylinders for the camping stove, although do have a back up solid fuel mini-stove.

Apart from that - not too shabby.

To keep warm and start a fire, rub two boy scouts together.

(n.b. this may no longer be an approved scouting procedure)

Shouldn't it read, Boy's Scout, Girl's Guide?

Boy Scouts (and Girl Guides) is a collective noun, although you can think of "Boy" as an adjective (it describes the type of "Scouts").

In my post above the lower case "scouts" and "guides" suggests that these are now to be read as verbs - indicating an action (e.g. "scouting") rather than a noun (i.e. a "Scout").  So the "Boy" and "Girl" now are the only nouns in the phrase.

In your post the apostrophe indicates a possesive - e.g. the "Scout" belongs to the "Boy" and the "Guide" belongs to the "Girl".

So the three phrases all have totally different meanings.

Edit:  Of course the purists will notice that I have erroneously used the term "collective noun" when in fact it is a "compound noun".

The collective noun for boy scouts would be a "troop" or "patrol" and for girl guides it would be a "giggle".

Yep.  We were scrambling around looking for torches and batteries (in the end OK), phone was half charged (but couldn't use the mobile networks for a while anyway - more useful as a torch.

Also didn't have much petrol in the car so would have been a caught short if we needed to get out and travel a bit.

Coming in late afternoon there was enough daylight to get organised. Might have been a bit different in the evening.

Trick app apparently, thought it was too good to be true.

an app that charges your phone with solar power.

Just changed emergency water, 156litres. Enough food for 2 weeks. Dried cat food a bit low.

Payday more tinned food. Another 30 liters of water storage. Dried and tinned  cat food. Thinking of getting a small crossbow to hunt rabbits to feed cats. Not sure yet.

also solar power charger for phones. http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=MB3591

And you should know that hitting a small moving target with said Recurve is very difficult. Xbows have telescopic sights.

Just ordered one of these babies - http://www.norfolkenterprises.co.nz/index.php?page=Product&productID=4085

Basically, wind up radio, torch and phone charger. We don't have the charger and I liked the extras.

Looking over my stock. Have enough food for 14 days. Cats will make 15 days. Need to rotate some of the canned food. 3 year old canned expired mackerel hmm. The expired corned beef will stay in until i replace.

Replaced emergency water the other day and forgot to say that  I'd not done for about 3 years and it still tasted ok, even without bleach.

Toiletries also this week so we don't stink. there's an army surplus site that do amazing used Arctic quality coats for $45 each. Stained but dry-cleaned.

Getting there.

It depends on what culture you are from. The Romans for example would eat the spleen as a snack when at the ampitheatre (ocelot - but probably any cat would suffice).

I'm confident I could feed the family for a couple of days from one of FT's cats.

... got any otters or larks FT?

This.
No larks teeth in otter's milk broth - God those Romans' had some weird recipes.

The advantage of a cheap but decent crossbow is you can get down on the level with the rabbit. trying to fire downwards with a huge Recurve  is tough. A Crossbow will do the job of a Compound - which cuse of it's size and other stuff  is a better hunting bow compared to the Recurve. I reckon cheap but decent Crossbows with sights are a lot easier to deal with than Compounds. Vickmeist will tell you the amount of work tensioning a compound and the equipment you need to do it  - it's not a convenient zombie/rabbit/zombie-rabbit killer. Unless you are an expert.

Just amazing, I fitted a 200 liter water pvc water barrel yesterday to one of the guttering down-pipes and the thing filled up within about 3 hours. It's not even that rainy today.

It's mind boggling how much water we waste.

Oh dear, superstition is going to take over. What next? Human sacrifice or dead chcikens? A very serious disease. I hope immigration is vetting anyone from Africa coming here at the moment. This is something we really don't need.
