Things to do in Wellington

Hello fellow Feverites,

As some of you know, i have a ticket to the All Whites match on November 14. I am looking at coming down on the Friday morning (poss Fri evening) and returning home on either Sunday morning or possibly Monday afternoon.

I would like to know what there is to do in Wellington for someone like myself. I enjoy Culture and also abstract Art. I would also be interested in some of the more historical restaurants or pubs that occupy your city. Also how good is the public transport in your city?

Thanks in advance

Buffy

Public transport is good. All buses $1 in the central city.

Te Papa is good, also there is an interesting exhibition with dots at the city Art Gallery.

Take a walk on Cuba mall, it's always interesting.

Make sure you try Tuatara beer, it's a good local brew.

Yeah transport in the city is good, elsewhere is pretty unreliable. Lots of museums about, arent we supposed to be the cultural/arts capital of NZ?

Sounds cool. Where is this located in relation to the CBD?

[QUOTE=Gooner For Life]Catch up with fellow Gooners

Yes i look forward to catching up with as many people as possible.

Cheers for feedback so far. Given that i should have accommodation sorted, how much money do you think i should bring to cover me for the weekend? (This money will most likely cover Food and Drink, with hopefully a small amount for other activities around the city)

Its right in the middle of courtenay place. Was slightly a joke as i work there  but the angelika movies are actually quite good, and a little bit different to the mainstream ones. So yeah if your into arthouse movies,go for it.

Depends how much you're looking to spend at the pub. If we win, lots.

But nah,a lot of things are pretty cheap round the city for what you're looking for. Te Papa being free for example. Restaurants tend to be quite a bit more expensive in the city though, but not ridiculous.

Out of interest, do any of those $1 buses take you from the city to the airport?  As I'll be trapped in the city and would rather not walk to the airport.

Nah,there is the flyer bus, which is reasonably expensive, but goes every 15mins. That runs from the airport, through the city and out to lower hutt. And then back obviously.Tegal2009-11-03 14:22:30

It's about $5.50 for the airport bus I think.

If it's a nice day just take a walk along the waterfront, it's choice. And it's effectively part of the CBD. You can pretty much walk everywhere actually (except to the airport although even that's only a short drive).

Check out the Saddleback, stitchbirds and Kaka in the Sanctuary (not to be confused with the place of the same name if you get stuck in the Backbencher too long)

Went down for the Gold Coast game and had an  absolutely awesome time. That art gallery is just amazing. Defo go there if you can. We went to the zoo, which wasn't as good as Auckland, and Te Papa is alright too, although we went before the Nix game, so my mind was elsewhere. Also there's Katherine Mansfield's house if you're into that kind of stuff? I thought it was pretty neat. Hmmm, what else did we do... The Botanical Gardens and Cable Car? Should be a few more flowers there now.

I can't believe this thread is so long already.

There are only a couple of things to do in Wellington.  One of them is watch football.  All of the others involve finding somewhere inside (because outside it's both cold and windy, even if it's sunny) and drinking (coffee or beer depending on the time of day).

Otherwise Wellington is pox.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

So, er, why do you still live here?

There are heaps of great things to do here, but the weather is the main downer for me.

Some other tips:
Spot Wellington's celebrity homeless man, "Blanket Man".
Visit the Phoenix store, cnr Hunter St and Waterloo Quay.
Go on a pub crawl.
Go for a drive around the South Coast.
Plenty of great walks too.

I spent 4 months in Christchurch earlier this year and Souvlaki's were everywhere! I had never even heard of them in Wellington. Wellys has kebab stores instead I find.

Laziness.

Te Papa is pretty cool actually.  And so is the new miniput down Houghton Bay Road.

And further to my original post the coffee is awesome and the beers aren't bad either.

Compared to where? It's better than anywhere else in NZ hands down. Which isn't saying much, but still.
I like tautologies because I like them.

Wellington's weather is very poorly rated. Seriously, this year it has actually rained sh*t all. (I know, I've only been poured on at the bus stop maybe once or twice max, not syaing there hasn't been more rain than that though) Other than that, the Window isn't actually that bad, plenty of other windier areas round NZ. (That actually have a name)

AS regards to the Flyer... it has free WLAN and leather seats. Very good choice to get around imo.

When you hit Cuba street make sure you're not going right after Wellington High gets out. You'll turn into a bogan, even if half are on exams.

Make sure you allow plenty of time to talk World Affairs with the world famous conversationist, Blanket Man!

Smithy, you disappoint me. Welllington's a great town. If it wasn't for the offer of a ludicrous salary which lured me North, I'd still be extremely happy living down there.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.
