Travelling to SE Asia on my own

Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, possibly Laos. Would you recommend someone doing it on their own? I consider myself a fairly independent traveller, having been a few places by myself (Aus and China). Obviously there are risks associated with solo travellers but it is something i would love to do whilst i have the chance.

Serious and comedy answers welcome.

I have been to Thailand and Vietnam.  My advice is to decide where you want to go and then do as must research as you can.

For example, the west coast of Thailand has a different weather patten to the east coast.  It could be 5 degrees in Hanoi and will be 30 in Ho Chi Minh. Read as much as you can about the places you plan to visit. Read Trip Advisor  forums and you will find other people will have asked similar questions to what you want to know. Thailand and Vietnam are fantastic places and as long as you use common sense you will be OK. I have been going to SE Asian every year since 2000 and love it.

You will be fine. If you never meet a westerner there will also be a large quantity of local women looking for attention

Yeah i have looked at the places i want to go lots on the net recently. The main things i have been trying to gauge are how safe i would be and also how easy booking accom on the fly would be. Ideally i would go for say 4-6 weeks (depending on budget and work) and unlike when i went to Shanghai i wouldn't stay in one hotel the whole time. So a biggie for me is the ease at which i can hop from place to place with peace of mind knowing it is piss easy to book a comfy room to stay in for x amount of nights.

Depending on the time of year you are going ( except Christmas) it is easy to hop from place to place and get accommodation. I have never done what you are going to do but I do know that good clean accommodation will always be there. Depending on budget you can get a room for the night in Thailand from $30 up to $500 per night.

Yeah have looked at Malaysia it is very cheap and extremely good value for money accommodation wise. Could be a good starting point (or ending point) if connections are good. Not sure on that one though.

I was bumming around India for a number of months about 60 years ago and just before heading to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand we met a Swedish bloke who had just come from Malaysia.  We asked him about it, and he said he travelled down the West Coast of the country, and it was "shit boring".

A few weeks later we were travelling up the West coast of Malaysia, and it really was shit boring.  The east coast is supposed to be a bit more interesting, but I'd suggest avoiding the west (unless you like places that are shit boring).    The only thing it has of interest is a part that Greenie used to base his hair style on

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked

Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

I've been to Malaysia a number of times. Good food, people are nice, English speaking but otherwise I would give it a miss. There are plenty more interesting and exotic places in that part of the world.

I've always regarded the Koreans as the Irish of Asia (friendly, drink a lot, every one picks on them). Is Malaysia the Belgium of Asia?

(BTW I really like the Belgians)

You should absolutely do it.

Be extra careful at land border crossings. There is always someone looking to get as much money out of you for a service they provide. That includes the immigration officers.

I like waterfalls. So would recommend this.

Interesting comments from FM about west coast of Malaysia. I've been 4/5 times and I did not find it boring. Penang is a great place and has a lot of history. Lots to see and do and the food is fantastic. Malacca was also interesting.Langkawi is fine if you want a beach holiday but anything more than two days would be boring.

Guess it is just as well we do not all like the same things.
