Edison Pena one of the chilean miners trapped underground for 69 days just crossed the finish line of the New York Marathon

Whilst trapped underground he cut his mining boots down and used to run with a headlight down the tunnels twice each day to try and kep healthy and to show the mine he wasn't ready to let them take him. He became infamous for liking Elvis music and Graceland sent tapes for the miners to listen to while trapped and when he was released they invited him to graceland for this week.

The New York Marathon knowing he had consistantly run while trapped invited him to be their guest and watch the event but he asked to run in it even tho has never run more than 10miles at a time and is suffering a knee injury from being caught in the mine disaster

Apparently he suffered all through the marathon and was the number one target of the press and spectators so was cheered the whole way. man i feel quite blown away at this guy's spirit and determination

When I go to take a dump I always say I'm going to rescue some miners.
I like tautologies because I like them.

I agree Tawera Nikau is def inspiring

I just think there is something cool about any everyjoe deciding to run a marathon the week before it happens with no training. and thats not even taking into consideration this everyjoe recently spent 69days in horrific conditions plus sports knee injuries. it's a testament to determination and the will to enjoy every moment from life

Agreed. With all of that in the background, he could have been forgiven for caving in.
