I dont know how you others feel but I have always believed that in this universe we are not alone.

There are 300 million stars in the milky way galaxy alone and even if only 1/3rd have planets, that's 100 million possibilities. Surely there has to be something more advanced than us humans out there.

Anyway, I found this via Digg.com today...... Radio Signal

There may be life out there. But who cares? We never going to reach them because of the ridiculous distances involved.

But its because of those ridiculous distances that you'd be stupid to be 100% sure in saying there is no life out there, because you just dont know

Of course there are, it is arrogant in the extreme to assume that we and we alone have the environment, conditions and above all the brainpower to evolve as we have done. Other beings are sure to have done the same in other places.

And they've probably already been here. Where do you think the US government got the technological blueprint for the Stealth Bomber, amongst other things? (Having said that, one mistake often made by UFO watchers and extraterrestrialists is that any beings out there are going to be more technologically advanced than us.)

That said, it seems unlikely that during our lifetime we will ever meet with them through our own efforts. Ever since the NASA space programs of the sixties man has been focussed on rocket propulsion for space travel, which given the distances involved if we want to reach other worlds (other than the howling wilderness that is Mars) is an exercise in futility. NASA should have (maybe they did?) spent its billions researching the possibilities for teleportation and the existence or otherwise of time portals in order to achieve their long term goal of landing on other planets.

I dont think there are Aliens here although I do wonder what planet half the Maori Party & Sue Bradford is from.

But seriously, would it be good if we really did find contact or could they be bad guys and if we got their attention our existence might not last much longer??

Well, if they're anything like the guys in the movie "Mars Attack" I don't want to know.  Problem is that the only way to kill them was to play Country & Western (both kind of music) loudly - I hate C & W !!

Where did the idea of anal probing come from?

Aliens come millions of light years just to check what you had for lunch.

Personally I don't think there are aliens out there (I'd admit I'm wrong if proved though).  But how can you say that TheJam, when for all we know it could be the case that we are the only living things in the universe.

Btw, I reckon teleportation would be cool.  Would be quite dangerous though.

I think that the universe is so vast, and so much of it we have no idea about, that there just has to be something living out there. Probably not in our own solar system, although apparently some of Saturn's moons (it has 52) are close to what we have here on earth in terms of habitability.
And that's another assumption we make; that other planets are too cold/hot to sustain life. They are only too hot or too cold to sustain life as we know it.

Yeah, the universe is absolutely massive, but that doesn't mean there are aliens out there.

On teleportation, it really is just the next extension of the invention of the fax machine or email. The biggest issue lies not with the breaking down of matter (depending on what you believe this has already been achieved, way back in the 1940s) but the reassembling of this matter into its original form. This is why it mankind is unlikely to be able to send himself through space and time; being an animate object means the matter that makes us up is too unstable and fluid. It may be possible in the future to send an inanimate object through space and time, but mankind? Probably not.
A lot of people asssume that teleportation - if possible - would be an instantaneous event, but I'm not so sure. Einstein proved that travelling quicker than the speed of light is impossible, and, although there have in recent years been some discoveries of particles that are said to travel faster than that, I'm sure that this rule will always apply.

Of course it doesn't mean that there are, but I still maintain that for mankind to claim that we and our planet are unique in this regard is both naive and vain.
Right now in a world far, far away I'm sure there are another couple of creatures having this exact same debate.

Would meeting Aliens be good or bad? Would religeon find an excuse? Would any Government allow us to know? I mean the US Government have covered up so much I don't think they know what is real or not. Would the Aliens be friendly? Is anal probing just a scare tactic by the US Government to keep us in fear of Aliens??

But for all you know we arent the only living things. As i said in my first post...the amount of space out there is so great itd be impossible for us to explore it all...so itd be kind of hard to definetly say there isnt anything out there. Im not saying there is,just that is probable...but who cares

If we were to be able to communicate with them it would have to be via a common language, and probably the only "language" common to all beings is mathematics. So that counts me out as a go-between, Maths and I don't get on so well.

On the subject of the US Govt, I've often thought about standing for US Presidency just so I can find out what they really know. Although having said that, Dubya has been there for six years (was it worth the price George?) and he still looks perpetually bewildered.

Time travel, now there is an interesting debate. Aside from the myriad paradoxes it could create do you think it's possible?
Theoretically it is. If tachyons do exist then it is technically possible for something to travel faster than the speed of light. And if something can travel faster than the speed of light, forward time travel is in theory possible. I think it is more about actually warping time than travelling forward in it as such, but being able to make time pass around you faster than you yourself are moving at (and aging) would have the same affect. Wouldn't it?
