Wellington Restaurants?

After close to a year in New Zealand, we hope to finally make it down to Wellington this weekend and get to the Nix game.Yeah!!

Just wondering if anyone has tips on inexpensive places to eat lunch or dinner in Wellington. We're not really into chain restaurants, and like international food. Not looking for fancy. When we went to Auckland a while back we found a Cambodian place where we got dinner for two for under $30 - that's the kind of thing we hope to find in Wellington.

Any tips?

Pizzaria Napoli on Courtney Place is a favourite of the Fever. Bit more expensive than what you've mentioned but well worth a visit.

I really rate Cha on Courtenay place for a cheap and cheerful meal. Not licensed though if you want a drink.  Delicious Taiwanese food, in big portions, for about $12-15 a main.

Thanks! Those sound like great suggestions! Drinking is not mandatory for us, so the Taiwanese place would work fine. We'll be in town for a couple of days, so could try different places.

You should go to the capital markets if you want international food. It's just an international food court so not somewhere for a nice dinner, but you get a cheap and good lunch:

http://capitalmarket.co.nz/

I like the place that sells Caucasus cuisine like shashliks and plhov.

Otherwise Basque for tapas, Cha (as mentioned above) was being refit last I looked, Chow is a really good fusion asian restaurant, Hede has really good japanese. Oaks Satay is a Wellington institution / hidden gem for really good south / east asian if you don't mind the decor.  But a good thing to do is just walk around Courtney, Dixon St, and Cuba and just see what appeals. There is a massive variety.

Is Cha open again? It was being worked on. If it is its a good place to go. It is pretty authentic (try the deep fried jelly fish), cheap, and never seems to be closed.

If you are into a spot of Italian, Nicolini's on Coutenay Place is pretty good. http://www.nicolinis.co.nz/menu/

Most Pasta dishes around the $20 mark and also get you in and out in well under an hour if you are a bit pushed for time.

We'll be sitting near the zone during the game. Due to a dodgy heart, we have to be in the seated areas, but we certainly cheer loudly.

Are you on twitter? I can get in touch with people on there. May come to the pub before the game, though not sure if we'll make it in time.

Sounds like I'll want to move to Wellington after seeing the variety in food you guys have there!

On a friday night you should check out the food trucks that congregate on lower cuba, there can be some interesting food there. I like the egyption food truck, and also the greek goat.

Actually, the whole cuba dupa thing is on this weekend:

http://cubadupa.co.nz/

So Cuba Street will be full of food stores, performances, parades, etc. It's a street festival similar to the Nottinghill Carnival.

If you're driving down I can highly recommend holding on to your ablutions until you reach Shannon. There are some good public toilets there :-)

Pretty sure it was open when I walked past there on the weekend but I could be wrong.

Damn, this conversation makes me want Cha.

Considering theres only a hand full of KFC's in the region it wouldn't be much of a crawl. Be a bit of a road trip actually.

Yeah, Cuba St is great, nice bars, nice food, buskers, etc. an ecletic sort of place. In some ways the crowds and performances diminished its appeal, but on the other hand it had a fun vibe to it. I was pretty appauled to see the grafiti up and down the street though, it isn't normally there - hopefully that dude is caught because only artistic graffiti is really acceptable, just writing pork everywhere is a bit lame.

What do you think of the Ian Curtis wall? For decades the council fought a battle with the artists behind it, now it's official and part of Wellington culture. I'm sure if Banksy painted a mural the council would be pretty happy. But with a few very rare exceptions (like the two above) it should be done with the council and building owners consent.

Street art and murals give a city it's identity and makes otherwise dull buildings interesting. Writing Pork everywhere is just dumb.

Commissioned graffiti-style artwork and graffiti are very seperate things.

commissioned work is by definition not graffiti.
